1983 World Cup heroes to reunite in Singapore for first Asia gathering

MUMBAI: Some victories never fade, they simply come back to take another lap of honour. More than four decades after scripting one of Indian sport’s greatest triumphs, the heroes of the 1983 Cricket World Cup will reunite in Asia for the very first time, with Mariners Cricket Club Singapore hosting the three-day ’83 Legends Tour in Singapore from August 7 to 9.

The event will bring together some of Indian cricket’s most celebrated names, including inspirational captain Kapil Dev, batting great Sunil Gavaskar and Player of the Match in the 1983 World Cup final Mohinder Amarnath, for a series of celebrations, fan engagements, leadership sessions and an exhibition match honouring the team that transformed Indian cricket forever.

Organised by Mariners Cricket Club Singapore, the reunion is designed to blend cricket nostalgia with business networking. The club, which brings together executives from the global maritime industry through a shared love of cricket, aims to use the event to strengthen regional engagement with the sport while promoting Singapore as a hub for both cricket and corporate collaboration.

The celebrations will begin on August 7 with a Grand Gala Dinner expected to host more than 600 guests from the business and sporting communities. The evening will feature an interactive conversation with members of the legendary squad, offering fans and corporate leaders a chance to hear firsthand stories from the players who helped redefine Indian cricket.

Alongside the gala, the organisers have scheduled a series of leadership workshops on August 7 and 8. The 90-minute interactive sessions will draw lessons from elite sport to explore topics such as leadership, goal-setting, teamwork and overcoming challenges, with the objective of applying sporting principles to business while encouraging the growth of cricket in Southeast Asia.

The sporting highlight of the tour will take place on August 8 when the former World Cup winners face the Mariners in a Legends vs Mariners exhibition match. The contest will form part of the annual Mariners Premier League, which features 61 teams competing across corporate, open, women’s and junior categories.

In a unique initiative, the exhibition match will be live-streamed to more than 2,000 commercial ships at sea, reflecting Singapore’s position as a global maritime hub and allowing thousands of seafarers around the world to follow the action live.

Commenting on the event, Mariners Cricket Club Singapore president Avijit Dutta said the 1983 World Cup victory remains a timeless example of how unity, belief and leadership can overcome seemingly impossible odds.

He added that bringing the legendary squad to Singapore creates an opportunity to inspire both the local business community and the next generation of athletes. Dutta also said that broadcasting the exhibition match live to thousands of mariners reinforces Singapore’s global maritime connectivity while helping spread the appeal of cricket across Southeast Asia.
