Govt sees no critical data loss in Tata Electronics cyber incident

MUMBAI: Not every cyber scare leaves a digital scar. The Centre has said it has not found any evidence so far that critical information was compromised in the recent cybersecurity incident involving Tata Electronics, easing concerns over the security of one of Apple’s key manufacturing partners in India.

Speaking on Monday, Electronics and Information Technology Secretary S. Krishnan said the company’s assessment, carried out in coordination with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), has not indicated any significant loss of sensitive data at this stage.

Krishnan said Tata Electronics continues to work closely with the ministry as authorities assess the incident, adding that investigations remain underway and the situation is still under review.

The government’s latest update comes after the cyber incident triggered questions about its potential impact on Apple’s expanding manufacturing ecosystem in India, where Tata Electronics has emerged as a key supply chain partner.

Earlier, Krishnan had confirmed that the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) was examining the incident as part of the government’s response to the reported breach.

Addressing the launch of the latest Digital Threat Report, the MeitY secretary said cybersecurity should no longer be viewed merely as an IT function but as a core business risk. He urged organisations to strengthen resilience through continuous monitoring, robust security practices and faster incident response mechanisms to counter an increasingly complex threat landscape.

While investigators continue to scrutinise the incident, the government’s initial assessment suggests the breach has not resulted in any confirmed compromise of critical information, offering some reassurance as India’s electronics manufacturing sector continues its rapid expansion.
