Made-in-India chips power key missions as India boosts space self-reliance
Indigenous semiconductors are supporting lunar, solar and satellite missions
NEW DELHI: India’s space programme is getting a homegrown chip boost, with domestically designed and manufactured semiconductors powering key missions involving lunar and solar exploration, satellites and launch vehicles.
Union electronics and IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on National Space Day that Made-in-India chips are being used in Indian space missions.
According to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), semiconductor components designed and manufactured in India are being deployed across the country’s space programme, supporting the broader push for technological self-reliance.
A key contributor to this capability is the Semiconductor Laboratory (SCL) in Mohali.
The facility develops and manufactures flight-grade semiconductor components designed to withstand the extreme conditions encountered in space.
SCL produces a range of specialised components, including radiation-hardened chips, electro-optical CCD and CMOS imagers, application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and sensors.
Its sensors are designed to measure critical parameters such as pressure, acceleration, temperature and acoustics.
The use of these components across India’s space programme highlights the growing role of domestic semiconductor manufacturing in supporting critical space infrastructure.
As India expands its ambitions in lunar exploration, solar science, satellite technology and launch systems, locally designed and manufactured chips are expected to play an increasingly important role in reducing dependence on overseas technology.
