Former governor D. Y. Patil, founder of D Y Patil Group, passes way at 90

KOLHAPUR: Dnyandeo Yashwantrao Patil, known across Maharashtra simply as D. Y. Patil, has died in Kolhapur at the age of 90. Few figures in Indian public life managed to straddle politics and education quite as deliberately as he did, and fewer still left behind an institutional footprint of comparable scale.

Patil’s career began not in the classroom but in municipal politics. He was elected to the Kolhapur Municipal Council in 1957 and later served as an MLA from the Panhala constituency through the late 1960s and 1970s. It was a conventional enough start for a Congress leader of that generation. What followed was not. In 1983 he founded the D. Y. Patil Educational Complex, a decision that would define the rest of his life. Over four decades that single institution metastasised into a sprawling network spanning Navi Mumbai, Pune and Kolhapur, encompassing more than 180 institutions and several deemed universities, with strongholds in medicine, engineering, law, biotechnology and management. Few private educationists in India have built at that scale, and fewer still have done so while simultaneously holding constitutional office.

That second act came later. Patil served as governor of Tripura from 2009 to 2013, moved to Bihar in 2013, and briefly held additional charge of West Bengal in mid-2014. Governorships in India are not typically remembered for policy activism, but Patil used his tenure to push public health infrastructure and rural education access, themes that ran consistently through his career whether he was in Raj Bhavan or on a university campus. The Padma Shri, awarded in 1991 for his social work, came well before the gubernatorial postings, a reminder that the honours followed the work rather than the office.

Patil’s family remains deeply embedded in Maharashtra’s public life. His son Satej (Bunty) Patil is a senior Congress leader and sitting MLA, while another son, Sanjay Patil, has carried forward the industrial and educational ventures. Grandchildren, including Ruturaj Patil, are already active in politics and business, suggesting the institution-building instinct has not skipped a generation.

Tributes have poured in from across the political spectrum, a rare point of consensus in Maharashtra’s often fractious public life, testament to how broadly Patil’s contribution to education was felt. Funeral arrangements are being finalised in Kolhapur, the district where his story began and where, fittingly, it has now closed.
