TRAI revamps MyCall app to let users rate voice call quality

MUMBAI: Looks like dropped calls are finally getting a direct line to the regulator. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has rolled out a revamped version of its MyCall mobile application, giving subscribers a more active role in judging the quality of voice calls and helping telecom operators pinpoint network trouble spots.

The updated app allows users to rate their voice-calling experience and report issues such as call drops, echo, audio delays, cross connections, voice breaks, one-way audio and slow call connections. The feedback is shared in an anonymised format with both TRAI and telecom service providers (TSPs), enabling them to identify network deficiencies and take corrective action.

Unlike conventional network monitoring, which relies primarily on technical Quality of Service (QoS) benchmarks, the revamped platform also captures consumers’ Quality of Experience (QoE), offering a more rounded picture of how networks perform in real-world conditions.

For a country with more than one billion telecom subscribers, TRAI said voice calling remains the most basic telecom service and often the first indicator consumers use to judge network quality.

The latest version of the application introduces several new features, including a one-to-five star rating system, automatic prompts after completed calls, an interactive map that displays users’ call rating history and a coverage test that measures signal strength.

TRAI Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti said the enhanced application is designed to encourage greater consumer participation in monitoring telecom service quality by making it easier for subscribers to provide immediate feedback after a call.

According to Lahoti, the information collected through the app will help operators identify weak network areas more quickly, improve service quality and ultimately deliver a better calling experience for users.

The initiative also reflects TRAI’s broader push towards a consumer-centric and data-driven approach to telecom regulation, combining technical performance metrics with user feedback to gain deeper insights into network reliability.

The MyCall application is currently available for Android smartphones through the Google Play Store, with TRAI encouraging users to download the app and regularly rate their voice-calling experience.

As India’s telecom networks race to support everything from 5G services to AI-powered applications, TRAI is betting that one of the most valuable network diagnostics may still come from the people making the calls.
