Mumbai: The Reserve Bank of India has appointed Monisha Chakraborty as executive director with effect from 3 August 2026.

Before her elevation, Chakraborty served as chief general manager-in-charge in the Reserve Bank’s Department of Supervision.

A career central banker with more than three decades of experience at the RBI, she has worked across supervision, foreign exchange, and government and bank accounts. She was also part of a technical committee that reviewed the format of the RBI’s balance sheet and profit and loss account and has previously served as banking ombudsman.

In her new role as executive director, Chakraborty will oversee the Foreign Exchange Department and the Financial Markets Regulation Department.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and a master’s degree in business economics, both from the University of Delhi.

The appointment comes as the RBI continues to strengthen its senior leadership, with Chakraborty’s extensive experience across regulatory and supervisory functions expected to support the central bank’s oversight of India’s foreign exchange and financial markets.
