MUMBAI: The rulebook may still be unwritten, but the red pen is already in circulation. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has taken the next step in shaping the future of India’s digital news ecosystem, inviting stakeholders to submit detailed feedback on the existing regulatory framework as well as proposed legislative provisions.

According to sources, the move follows a consultation meeting hosted by NITI Aayog, where representatives from the Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA) and the ministry discussed key issues affecting the country’s fast-evolving digital news publishing landscape.

As part of the consultation process, the ministry has now sought written comments and suggestions from stakeholders on both the current regulatory framework and the proposed legislative changes. The exercise is expected to help the government assess industry concerns before deciding on any regulatory or legislative reforms.

Sources said the DNPA is preparing a consolidated submission that will incorporate feedback from its member publishers.

The consultation meeting was attended by Anil Malhotra of Zee Media, Sanjay Sindhwani of The Indian Express Online, and Sujata Gupta, representing the DNPA, according to sources.

The latest consultation signals that the government is continuing its engagement with industry stakeholders as it evaluates the regulatory architecture governing digital news publishers. By seeking structured written submissions, the MIB appears to be broadening the consultation process before finalising its approach.

While no specific regulatory changes have been announced, the consultation underscores the government’s ongoing efforts to balance the rapid growth of digital news publishing with an evolving policy framework. Any future legislative proposals are expected to take shape after the ministry reviews feedback from publishers and other stakeholders.
