India’s GST collections top Rs 2.11 lakh crore, post fastest growth in 14 months
Import tax surge lifts revenues to a 14-month growth high as collections cross Rs 2 lakh crore
New Delhi: India’s GST kitty is ringing louder. Gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections rose 15.4 per cent year on year to Rs 2.11 lakh crore in July, marking the fastest monthly growth in 14 months and only the second time this financial year that collections have crossed the Rs 2 lakh crore mark.
The strong performance was driven by robust import-related tax collections, which jumped 28.8 per cent to Rs 66,511 crore. Domestic GST revenue also remained healthy, rising 10.1 per cent to Rs 1.45 lakh crore, reflecting resilient consumption and steady economic activity despite global geopolitical uncertainties.
July’s growth outpaced June, when GST collections had increased 13.9 per cent to Rs 1.95 lakh crore. It also marked the strongest year-on-year expansion since May 2025, when collections grew 16.4 per cent.
The latest figures indicate a return above the Rs 2 lakh crore threshold after collections moderated to Rs 1.94 lakh crore in May and Rs 1.95 lakh crore in June. The milestone was first achieved this financial year in April, when GST revenues touched a record Rs 2.43 lakh crore, aided by year-end business transactions and annual return filings.
After accounting for refunds, net GST collections stood at Rs 1.81 lakh crore in July, up 15.8 per cent from a year earlier. Total refunds rose 13.1 per cent to Rs 29,968 crore, while net customs GST revenue climbed 30.3 per cent to Rs 54,223 crore, highlighting the sharp increase in import-related tax collections.
On a cumulative basis, gross GST collections during April to July of FY27 rose 10.1 per cent to Rs 8.43 lakh crore from Rs 7.66 lakh crore in the corresponding period last year. Net GST collections for the four-month period increased 9.2 per cent to Rs 7.21 lakh crore.
Among the larger states, Haryana recorded the strongest year-on-year growth in July GST collections at 25 per cent. Gujarat and Telangana followed with 19 per cent growth each, while Punjab and Kerala posted increases of 16 per cent. Uttar Pradesh recorded a 15 per cent rise, Maharashtra, the country’s largest GST contributor, reported a 13 per cent increase, Karnataka grew 12 per cent and Delhi registered 8 per cent growth.
Not all states saw gains. Himachal Pradesh recorded the sharpest decline at 22 per cent, followed by Uttarakhand at 18 per cent and Puducherry at 17 per cent. Madhya Pradesh reported a 10 per cent fall, Andhra Pradesh declined 5 per cent and Tamil Nadu posted a marginal 1 per cent dip.
The latest GST figures suggest that India’s tax collections continue to benefit from healthy domestic demand and stronger import activity, providing the government with a solid revenue base as the financial year gathers pace.
