MUMBAI: Government departments are setting up Quick Response Teams (QRTs) to tackle fake, misleading and misinformation-driven content on social media, according to an Economic Times report. The move is aimed at enabling ministries to respond quickly to rumours and inaccurate information circulating across digital platforms.

The QRTs will scrutinise such content, coordinate with relevant teams and issue factual responses while also monitoring social media conversations around government policies, schemes, programmes, decisions and announcements.

The power, agriculture and commerce departments have already constituted their QRTs, with other government departments expected to follow.

Under the new system, social media and digital media teams within individual ministries and departments will regularly monitor relevant platforms. They will work with inputs from the new media wing of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to identify content requiring verification or a formal response.

Content that appears fake, misleading, factually incorrect, manipulated, distorted or taken out of context will be flagged to the respective QRTs. Posts that could create public confusion will also come under scrutiny.

Once flagged, the teams will verify the information and establish the factual position before coordinating an appropriate response. The framework is intended to ensure that misleading claims do not gain wider traction before official clarification is issued.

The QRTs will also coordinate with the PIB fact check unit when required, creating an additional layer of verification for claims involving government departments and their work.

Cases involving high-virality content, significant public interest, sensitive policy matters or potential public harm will be escalated to senior authorities. Issues with legal implications, coordinated misinformation campaigns or matters involving multiple ministries will also be referred for higher-level intervention.

The initiative reflects the government’s growing focus on faster digital communication as social media becomes an increasingly important channel for public information. By combining continuous monitoring with dedicated response teams, departments are looking to make official communication quicker and more coordinated when misinformation starts gaining ground.
