Kenya to limit foreign television content in the country

NEW DELHI: Alarmed by the increasing viewership of foreign content including Indian television channels, the East African country, Kenya has decided to limit the amount of foreign content its local broadcasters can show.

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) wants to impose a directive that all TV stations must limit non-Kenyan programming to 40 per cent of their transmissions.

Interestingly, Indian TV channels are very popular in Kenya in view of the large Indian Diaspora there.

The Authority says it is working with Kenya’s government to help create a framework to help young artists and creatives to provide programming and multimedia material.

CA says that broadcasters who fail to adhere to the new limits risk being fined or will have to pay more into the nation’s Universal Service Fund licensing scheme
