Young French filmmakers shine at MIFF 2026 with bold stories and fresh voices
La Fémis showcase brings emerging talent and global perspectives to Mumbai festival
MUMBAI: Fresh voices from France found an enthusiastic audience at MIFF 2026 as a special showcase of student films highlighted the creativity and ambition of the next generation of global filmmakers.
Held under the Emerging Voices: Film School Editions section, the screening featured seven films from La Fémis, one of the world’s most respected film institutions. The programme offered audiences at the Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) 2026 a diverse mix of fiction, animation and documentary storytelling.
Among the highlights was The Awakening, an eight-minute short fiction film directed by Faeze Karimpour. The film follows a young boy paralysed by stage fright whose attempt to escape embarrassment evolves into a journey of self-discovery and renewed confidence.
During the event, Faeze Karimpour was felicitated by NFDC artistic director, film festivals, pankaj saxena. Speaking about her experience, French filmmaker Faeze Karimpour said, “MIFF is a big opportunity for young filmmakers like me.” She also thanked the festival for creating a platform that enables emerging international talent to connect with new audiences.
The showcase also featured Bowl Cut by Tamara Vittoz, a quietly humorous portrait of childhood resilience against the backdrop of adult conflict.
Animation also featured prominently, with Max by Emilien Pichon blending childhood curiosity with mystery, while My Internet Countryside by Lily Belbèze explored loneliness, friendship and digital-age relationships through a contemporary lens.
The screening further included Not to Die Alone by Tommy Boulet and Valentin Noël, a short fiction examining identity and social conditioning, alongside Signs from Below, an animation documentary by Maude Vuillez that immerses viewers in the experience of growing up deaf in a hearing world.
Completing the line-up was Still Waters by Juliette Gaudin, a nuanced exploration of caregiving, empathy and the subtle power dynamics that shape human relationships.
The screening drew strong participation from students, cinephiles and industry professionals, while interactions between French and Indian filmmakers added an international dimension to the festival. As MIFF continues to spotlight emerging talent, the La Fémis showcase demonstrated that the future of cinema is already finding its voice, one short film at a time.
