MUMBAI: The big screen just got a bigger upgrade. UFO Cinema Solutions has unveiled MAGNOVA, a premium large-format cinema experience built around what it describes as India’s first acoustic-transparent Direct View 4K HDR LED cinema screen, with the first installation showcased at Magic Framez, Kakkanad, Kochi.

The unveiling, attended by actor Rakesh Roshan and veteran South Indian actress Rohini Molleti, marks a move away from conventional projection-led cinema presentation towards Direct View LED technology, where the display itself produces the image.

The Kochi auditorium features a 14-metre-wide by 6-metre-high Scope-format screen with a 3.91 mm pixel pitch, DCI-approved Direct View LED technology and 4K HDR capability. The setup is designed to deliver higher brightness, deeper blacks and greater contrast while maintaining consistent picture quality across the viewing area.

What makes MAGNOVA particularly notable is its acoustic-transparent architecture. The LED screen allows speakers to be positioned directly behind it, helping sound remain spatially aligned with the action on screen. The installation pairs this with Dolby Atmos immersive audio and Pulz Cinema Speakers.

At its core is HEYLED by TIMEWAYING, the Direct View LED cinema technology manufacturer. UFO Cinema Solutions is positioning the format as a premium auditorium proposition for exhibitors looking to differentiate their screens as audiences increasingly have access to high-quality home viewing.

The opportunity is sizeable. India has approximately 10,000 cinema screens, but only around 50 operate as premium large-format screens, leaving considerable room for exhibitors to develop higher-end theatrical experiences.

That premium positioning could become particularly relevant for spectacle-driven films such as Avatar, Avengers, Spider-Man and Odyssey, as well as upcoming Indian productions such as Ramayana, where screen size, brightness, contrast, colour reproduction and immersive audio can influence the theatrical experience.

MAGNOVA will also be showcased at Big Cine Expo on August 18, 2026, where UFO Cinema Solutions is the Innovation Partner, giving exhibitors and cinema professionals a closer look at the technology.

Pradeep Shetty, Business Head, UFO Cinema Solutions, UFO Cine Media Network, said the company is bringing together CINITY for premium large-format projection systems and HEYLED for Direct View LED cinema screens to give Indian exhibitors access to newer theatrical technologies.

Rather than simply replacing projection with LED, the company is pitching MAGNOVA as a complete premium-auditorium proposition, combining the screen, sound and cinema infrastructure into one experience. For an industry competing not just with other cinemas but also increasingly sophisticated home screens, the race for the wow factor is clearly getting brighter.
