The Ghost of Sparta gets a new face as Dave Bautista eyes God of War
Injury forces recast as Amazon eyes October restart for live-action gaming adaptation
Los Angeles: The Ghost of Sparta could soon have a new face. Actor Dave Bautista is reportedly in talks to take over the role of Kratos in Amazon MGM Studios’ live-action adaptation of God of War after an injury forced the production to recast its lead.
The move comes after original Kratos actor Ryan Hurst reportedly suffered a torn bicep while filming an action sequence in Vancouver. Four episodes had already been completed before production was halted.
With surgery and rehabilitation expected to sideline Hurst for several months, Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television are understood to have opted for a recast instead of delaying the series until 2027. If Bautista’s deal is finalised, he is expected to reshoot the four completed episodes.
The casting appears to solve more than one production challenge. Bautista recently regained his trademark physique while preparing for the upcoming Highlander reboot, reducing the need for an extended physical transformation. Alongside his action credentials from WWE and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, the actor has earned praise for dramatic performances in Blade Runner 2049, Dune, Knock at the Cabin and Glass Onion.
The actor also has an established working relationship with Amazon, having appeared in the My Spy films, The Wrecking Crew and the forthcoming Road House 2, making him a familiar face within the studio’s growing slate.
The series is being developed by Ronald D. Moore and has already secured a two-season order. It will adapt the Norse storyline introduced in the 2018 God of War game, following Kratos and his son Atreus as they embark on a journey to scatter the ashes of Kratos’ wife Faye from the highest peak in the Nine Realms.
The supporting cast includes Callum Vinson as Atreus, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson as Thor, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Max Parker as Heimdall, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka as Brok and Sindri respectively, while Alastair Duncan will voice Mimir. Reports also suggest Atreus will be recast with an older actor in the second season to reflect the time jump leading into God of War Ragnarök.
Following the production pause earlier this summer, pre-production is expected to resume in mid-August, with cameras likely to start rolling again in October. If Bautista officially joins the project, the series will not only get a new Kratos, but also a chance to keep its ambitious adaptation on schedule.
