Tamil producers halt new film releases from September 1 amid standoff

MUMBAI: The Tamil film industry is heading for a release freeze, with the latest clash moving from the screen to the negotiating table. The Tamil Film Producers Council and Tamil Film Active Producers Association have jointly announced that no new Tamil films will be released in theatres from September 1, 2026, escalating a dispute over theatrical windows, OTT releases and payment terms.

The decision follows a move by the Tamil Nadu Theatre Distributors Association and Theatre Owners Association to introduce an eight-week theatrical window for new Tamil films before they become available on OTT platforms. The associations have also decided against providing advance payments for new films, according to the producers’ bodies.

The producers’ associations have objected to the move, saying it was taken without consultation with the Tamil Film Producers Council, Tamil Film Active Producers Association or other industry bodies. They have described the decision by distributors and theatre owners as unilateral.

The producers have now responded with a freeze of their own. From September 1, not only will new Tamil films stop arriving in cinemas, but shooting and post-production activities related to Tamil films will also be halted.

The standoff puts the spotlight on one of the Tamil film industry’s most persistent balancing acts: how long a film should remain exclusive to cinemas before moving to streaming, and how revenue and payment structures should work across producers, distributors and exhibitors.

The producers’ bodies have appealed to the Tamil Nadu government to intervene and help broker a resolution, highlighting the potential impact on the thousands of workers who depend on the Tamil film industry.

For an industry built around keeping the show going, September could bring an unusual sight, theatres ready for films, but producers refusing to send them to the screen.
