Spider-Man: Brand New Day leads box office for third weekend

MUMBAI: Spider-Man is keeping the box office web firmly intact. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is swinging into its third consecutive weekend at No. 1 in North America, holding off newcomers The End of Oak Street and PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie.

Sony Pictures’ superhero film, led by Tom Holland and Zendaya, collected $19 million on Friday and is targeting around $67 million for the weekend. If projections hold, its domestic haul will reach approximately $782.8 million after 17 days, putting it at No. 5 on the all-time domestic chart.

That would place the film just behind Avatar, which stands at $785.2 million, while pushing it further ahead of Top Gun: Maverick, whose domestic run ended at $718 million.

The film has already added another record to its web of box-office achievements, becoming the fastest title to cross $700 million domestically during the week.

Warner Bros.’ dinosaur survival film The End of Oak Street opened with $8.1 million on Friday, including Thursday previews, and is heading towards an estimated $20 million opening weekend.

Directed by David Robert Mitchell, the film launched in 3,400 North American theatres and carries an $80 million production budget. Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor star as parents whose early-1980s suburban neighbourhood suddenly finds itself overrun by prehistoric predators.

The film has scored an 85 per cent critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 77 per cent audience score, while audiences gave it a B CinemaScore.

Meanwhile, PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie fetched $7.3 million on Friday, including previews, with Paramount also projecting an opening weekend of around $20 million.

The animated adventure opened in more than 3,500 North American locations and has already collected $38.3 million from 52 international markets. Its production budget stands at $39.5 million.

The film earned an A CinemaScore, matching the grade given to 2023’s PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie, and currently holds an 84 per cent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.

While the two newcomers battle for third, Universal’s The Odyssey is expected to remain at No. 2 in its fifth weekend.

The Christopher Nolan film is projected to add around $23 million, taking its domestic total to approximately $504.4 million.

Rounding out the top five is the music documentary Katseye: Wild Hearts, directed by Nadia Hallgren. The film is expected to open with around $3.8 million from 724 North American screens.

The weekend also sees the theatrical arrival of thriller The Rivals of Amziah King, starring Matthew McConaughey, Kristen Stewart-led stoner comedy The Wrong Girls and Green Day-inspired comedy Nimrods, starring Mason Thames and Mckenna Grace.

For now, though, the box-office crown remains firmly in Spider-Man’s web.
