Robert Pattinson says The Batman Part II will take a different turn
Matt Reeves sequel is set for February 18, 2028 with plot details still under wraps
MUMBAI: Gotham is taking a detour, and Robert Pattinson says the next Batman chapter is heading somewhere audiences may not expect. The actor has described The Batman Part II as a “real left turn” from the 2022 film while retaining elements of its distinctive atmosphere.
“It’s so ambitious,” Pattinson said in a recent interview, describing the sequel as another different take on a Batman film. He added that while it moves sharply away from the first instalment, it still retains some of the feel established by the original.
The Batman Part II is scheduled to reach cinemas on February 18, 2028, with Matt Reeves returning as director for the follow-up to his 2022 film. Pattinson will again play Bruce Wayne, the role that introduced his version of the character to audiences.
Plot details remain under wraps, although the sequel has expanded its cast. Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan are set to appear alongside Pattinson, with Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry and Sebastian Koch also joining the supporting cast.
The sequel was originally announced in 2022, shortly after The Batman opened in cinemas. It was later dated for 2028, meaning audiences will wait roughly six years between the two films.
That lengthy wait has previously drawn attention, but DC Studios co-chief James Gunn has argued that long gaps between major sequels are not unusual. Writing on Threads in 2025, Gunn pointed to several examples, including the seven-year gap between Alien and Aliens, 14 years between The Incredibles films, seven years between the first two Terminator films, 13 years between Avatar and its sequel, 36 years between Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick, and six years between Guardians Vol. 2 and Guardians Vol. 3.
For Pattinson, however, the wait appears to be leading to something substantially different rather than simply more of the same. He said the sequel feels “really ambitious” and that he is excited to see how it turns out.
With the story still largely hidden, the next visit to Gotham is shaping up as a familiar world taking an unfamiliar route and Pattinson’s comments suggest The Batman Part II intends to make that turn count.
