R. Madhavan gets Padma Shri for services to Indian cinema
The actor, director and screenwriter joins 130 other recipients honoured in India’s 2026 civilian awards list
MUMBAI: One of India’s most versatile screen talents has received the recognition his career long demanded. R. Madhavan, the actor, director and screenwriter whose work spans Tamil, Hindi and Telugu cinema across three decades, has been awarded the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honour, for his contributions to art. The announcement was made by the ministry of home affairs on the eve of Republic Day.
Madhavan, who is listed under his full name Ranganathan Madhavan in the awards citation, represents Maharashtra. He called the honour something “beyond his wildest dreams” on social media, adding: “I consider this not just an award, but a responsibility. I promise to carry this honour with dignity, sincerity, and a deep sense of commitment to the values it represents.”
The recognition caps a career built on relentless reinvention. Madhavan first caught the public eye in Mani Ratnam’s cult romantic drama Alai Payuthey in 2000, then crossed over into Bollywood with Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein the following year. Over seven decades worth of film appearances across three languages, he has accumulated one National Film Award, five Filmfare Awards South, two Tamil Nadu State Film Awards and five SIIMA Awards.
His most ambitious project to date remains Rocketry: The Nambi Effect, his 2022 directorial debut in which he also played ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan, undergoing a remarkable physical transformation for the role. The film won the National Film Award for best feature film. More recently, he featured in Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar, now ranked the fourth highest-grossing Indian film of all time.
Off screen, Madhavan was appointed president of the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune in September 2023. He also holds an honorary doctorate from D.Y. Patil Education Society, awarded in 2021, and was named PETA India’s person of the year in 2011.
The 2026 Padma Awards, approved by President Droupadi Murmu, total 131 recipients: five Padma Vibhushan, 13 Padma Bhushan and 113 Padma Shri. Of those, 19 are women, 16 are posthumous and six belong to the foreigner/NRI/PIO/OCI category. Madhavan will receive his medallion and citation from the president at a formal investiture ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Three decades. Seventy-plus films. One national institute to lead. And now, a Padma Shri to go with it all.
