MUMBAI: The big screen is proving it still has the biggest pull. India’s multiplex industry recorded a 21 per cent year-on-year rise in box office collections during the first half of 2026, signalling that cinema audiences continue to embrace the theatrical experience despite an increasingly crowded entertainment landscape.

According to media reports citing the Multiplex Association of India (MAI), the growth was fuelled by a steady stream of successful releases across Hindi, regional and international cinema, helping sustain footfalls in both metropolitan centres and Tier-II and Tier-III cities.

The industry body, which represents 11 cinema chains operating more than 550 multiplexes and over 3,000 screens nationwide, said the strong performance reflected continued consumer confidence in cinemas and the strength of a diverse release calendar.

Among the titles driving audiences back to theatres were Border 2, Dhurandhar 2, Project Hail Mary, Michael, Bhoot Bangla, Obsession, Raja Shivaji, Karuppu, Mein Vaapas Aaunga, Cocktail 2 and Welcome to the Jungle, showcasing the growing contribution of multiple languages and genres to box office performance.

Commenting on the results, Kamal Gianchandani, President of the Multiplex Association of India, said the combination of blockbuster franchises, original storytelling, regional cinema and international releases struck a chord with audiences across the country. He added that the 21 per cent growth highlights the enduring appeal of cinemas as an immersive, shared entertainment experience.

The association also noted that the success of films across Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and international categories reflects the increasingly diverse viewing preferences of Indian audiences while reinforcing the resilience of the country’s theatrical exhibition business.

Looking ahead, MAI remains optimistic about the remainder of 2026, pointing to a strong pipeline of upcoming releases expected to sustain admissions and box office momentum through the second half of the year.

As streaming platforms continue to compete for attention at home, the latest numbers suggest that when the content clicks, audiences are still more than willing to reserve the best seat in the house.
