Mirzapur: The Movie opens at Rs 24.75 crore on day one
Gurmmeet Singh’s film beats Saiyaara and Awarapan 2 to post a strong debut
MUMBAI: Mirzapur has taken its throne to the big screen and the box office has noticed. Mirzapur: The Movie opened to an estimated Rs 24.75 crore net in India on Friday, according to industry tracker Sacnilk, giving the streaming franchise a sizeable theatrical launch.
Released on September 4 in Hindi alongside a Telugu-dubbed version, the Gurmmeet Singh-directed film recorded an estimated Rs 29.70 crore gross from 11,135 shows on its opening day.
The Hindi version did most of the heavy lifting, contributing around Rs 24.60 crore net, while the Telugu-dubbed release added approximately Rs 15 lakh.
Audience turnout strengthened as the day went on. Overall theatre occupancy stood at 42.81 per cent, rising from 25.85 per cent during morning shows to 41.15 per cent in the afternoon and 41.85 per cent in the evening. Night shows proved the biggest draw, registering 62.38 per cent occupancy.
Delhi NCR emerged as one of the strongest markets, recording 54.3 per cent occupancy across 1,249 shows. Mumbai, meanwhile, posted 30.8 per cent occupancy across 818 shows, while the Telugu version recorded an overall occupancy of 24.05 per cent.
The opening also came in above the Rs 18-20 crore range that several trade experts had predicted before release. Based on the figures cited, Mirzapur: The Movie also moved ahead of recent releases Saiyaara, which opened at Rs 22 crore, and Awarapan 2, which collected Rs 21.5 crore on day one.
The film now has to hold its ground against other titles in theatres, including Hanuman Ansh and Yash-starrer Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups.
The theatrical outing brings back several familiar faces from the Mirzapur universe, including Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal and Divyenndu, alongside Ravi Kishan, Jitendra Kumar, Rasika Dugal, Sheeba Chadha, Abhishek Banerjee, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Shweta Tripathi, Harshita Gaur, Sonal Chauhan, Rajesh Tailang, Sushant Singh, Mohit Malik and Kulbhushan Kharbanda.
Presented by Amazon MGM Studios and Excel Entertainment, the film is produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under Excel Entertainment and directed by Gurmmeet Singh.
The movie follows the success of the Mirzapur streaming series, which has completed three seasons, with a fourth season currently in development. Now, after making its name in the streaming world, the franchise has put its theatrical credentials on the scoreboard too and its first-day numbers suggest the Mirzapur effect has travelled beyond the small screen.
