MUMBAI: The Bat signal is taking a brief break. Director Matt Reeves has stepped away from production on The Batman Part II due to a family matter, prompting Warner Bros. and DC Studios to temporarily pause filming.

According to Deadline, Reeves has stepped away for personal reasons. The studios confirmed the production halt in a statement, saying that filming has been temporarily paused while the director focuses on a family matter.

The studios added that Reeves has their full support and that they look forward to continuing work on the sequel soon.

Production on the highly anticipated follow-up had been underway in London before the pause. The film is currently scheduled for release on 18 February 2028, although it remains unclear whether the interruption will affect that date.

Robert Pattinson is returning as Bruce Wayne/Batman, with Andy Serkis reprising his role as Alfred and Colin Farrell returning as the Penguin.

The sequel has also added a high-profile set of new cast members, including Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Jayme Lawson, Charles Dance, Gil Perez-Abraham and Sebastian Koch.

Pattinson has previously hinted that The Batman Part II will take the story in a markedly different direction from the 2022 original.

The actor described the sequel as “a real left turn” from the first film while suggesting that it will retain some of the original’s distinctive atmosphere. He also called the project “so ambitious” and expressed excitement about seeing how Reeves’ vision comes together.

Pattinson, who first played Bruce Wayne in The Batman, has also addressed speculation about whether his version of the character could eventually appear in the wider DC Universe being developed by James Gunn.

He suggested that bringing this iteration of Bruce Wayne into that world could be difficult, given how specifically the character and Reeves’ films have been developed.

The actor has also spoken about the intensity of playing the role, pointing to the lengthy shoots and the highly specific tone of the franchise.

For now, the Batmobile is parked, at least temporarily. Reeves is expected to return to the project, but whether the production pause has any knock-on effect on the February 2028 release remains to be seen.
