MUMBAI: The MCU is about to ride into a new era, and this one comes with a little more fire. Marvel Studios has locked 28 July 2028 as the theatrical release date for Ghost Rider, putting Ryan Gosling’s long-awaited Marvel debut firmly on the post-Avengers: Secret Wars calendar.

The studio had previously confirmed Ghost Rider for 2028 at San Diego Comic-Con but had not attached a specific date. Marvel has now updated its release schedule, placing the film just over two months after its first post-Secret Wars X-Men film, which is scheduled for 5 May 2028.

The 2028 Marvel calendar will then round off with Black Panther 3, which is set to arrive on 15 December 2028. The three films are currently expected to make up Marvel Studios’ entire theatrical slate for the year.

The timing is significant as Marvel looks to use the aftermath of Avengers: Secret Wars to reshape the Marvel Cinematic Universe and create a fresh entry point for audiences. While the studio has suggested that Secret Wars could effectively reset parts of the MCU, Black Panther 3 is already expected to retain elements of the existing continuity, with Shuri and M’Baku confirmed to return.

At the centre of Ghost Rider is Gosling, who will take on the supernatural Marvel character after reportedly campaigning for the role himself. Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has said Gosling personally approached him with a specific vision for the project.

The film will be directed by Shawn Levy, following his collaboration with Gosling on the upcoming Starfighter project. Plot details remain tightly under wraps, with production expected to begin early next year, potentially offering the first major clues about Marvel’s direction for the character.

For now, the release calendar paints a neat three-film picture of Marvel’s next chapter: X-Men arrives on 5 May, Ghost Rider follows on 28 July, and Black Panther 3 closes out the year on 15 December.

After Secret Wars, Marvel appears to be betting on a combination of fresh faces, familiar favourites and a few characters fans have been waiting years to see. Ghost Rider, at least, now has a date to burn into the calendar.
