MUMBAI: Curtains were drawn down on the 2009 Cannes Film Festival after Coco Chanel and Igor Stravinsky were showcased.

Judges of the festival deliberated on this year‘s awards winners and finally came to the conclusion after which veritable newcomers the Austrians came out on the top.

The coveted Palme d‘Or-Cannes‘s top prize-went to Austria‘s Michael Haneke‘s The White Ribbon that centers on impending World War I guilt and tragedy.

Acting honours were shared between Austrian Christoph Waltz, star of Quentin Tarantino‘s World War II flick Inglourious Basterds, and fellow Charlotte Gainsbourg of Lars von Trier‘s Antichrist. Gainsbourg stars opposite veteran actor Willem Dafoe in Antichrist.

Among the surprises at this year‘s Festival were past Palm d‘Or winners Jane Campion and Ken Loach and Oscar winners Ang Lee and Pedro Almodóvar.
