Frozen 3 unveils first look with new villain at D23 2026
Disney sequel sees Anna and Kristoff’s wedding interrupted by a mysterious threat
MUMBAI: Frozen has found a new way to send chills down Arendelle’s spine. Disney has unveiled the first look at Frozen 3 at its D23 fan event, revealing a mysterious new villain and a darker threat lurking beneath the Northern Lights.
The footage, which capped the evening’s showcase, began with an ominous musical number from Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell, followed by a romantic song from Josh Gad that hinted at an unexpected love story for Olaf.
The film picks up with Anna and Kristoff finally getting married, bringing Elsa, Olaf and Sven back together for the celebration. But the wedding festivities soon take a frosty turn when a mysterious curtain of Northern Lights descends upon Arendelle’s fjord.
Menzel and Bell’s characters sing of an invitation arriving through the glowing Northern Lights, which is later described as a “cursed frozen heart” signalling that something far more sinister is heading their way.
The footage then introduces the new threat without revealing her face. A jagged snowflake falls over Arendelle before Elsa freezes it into a block of ice. Soon, a glittering frozen pathway stretches towards the Northern Lights, drawing Elsa, Anna and the others towards the unknown.
There is still plenty of the franchise’s trademark humour amid the darker setting. Anna takes a swipe at Kristoff for failing to carry her wedding dress train, while Olaf celebrates catching the bouquet.
The mood changes when Elsa encounters the mysterious figure, who appears in a dark cloak surrounded by jagged snowflakes.
“Look what the Northern Lights dragged in,” the figure says before addressing the sisters of Arendelle: “We finally meet.”
And with that, Disney leaves the biggest question hanging in the frozen air, who exactly is the new villain?
Frozen 3 is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on 24 November 2027, eight years after Frozen 2, which was released in 2019. The franchise’s core cast is returning for the sequel.
Earlier this year, Kristen Bell dismissed reports that she would receive $60 million for voicing Anna in Frozen 3 and the already confirmed Frozen 4, although she acknowledged that she was paid “very well” for the franchise.
For now, Disney is keeping the new villain’s identity under wraps, leaving audiences with a trail of Northern Lights, a cursed heart and one very cold mystery to solve.
