MUMBAI: The battle of Troy has found an unlikely new arena: the clash between Hollywood and artificial intelligence. Elon Musk has ignited fresh debate across the entertainment and technology worlds after sharing an AI-generated trailer inspired by The Iliad, Homer’s epic tale of the Trojan War. Created by digital artist Heavy Pulp using xAI’s latest video-generation technology, the trailer features sweeping battle sequences, towering city walls, Achilles leading his troops into combat and the construction of the legendary Trojan Horse.

The cinematic quality of the trailer caught Musk’s attention, prompting him to publicly ask its creator, “Want to make a full movie?” The post quickly fuelled speculation about whether AI-generated feature films could become a serious challenger to traditional studio productions.

The timing of the trailer has added another layer to the conversation. It arrives as anticipation builds for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming adaptation of The Odyssey, one of the most closely watched film releases on Hollywood’s calendar.

Scheduled for release in July 2026, Nolan’s epic boasts a star-studded cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway and Robert Pattinson. The production is also being filmed using advanced IMAX technology, underscoring its scale and ambition.

At the same time, Nolan’s modern interpretation of Homer’s work has found itself in the crosshairs of internet controversy. History buffs and online critics have taken to social media to blast what they call a “woke,” overly Americanized take on Greek mythology.

Against that backdrop, Musk’s AI-generated Iliad trailer has been viewed by some online commentators as an alternative vision of classical storytelling, one that embraces more traditional visual aesthetics associated with ancient Greek legends.

Beyond the mythology debate, the trailer has become a showcase for xAI’s newest video-generation model, Grok Imagine Video 1.5.

According to xAI, the model represents a significant step forward in AI-generated video. It can create clips of up to 15 seconds while generating synchronised audio, environmental sound and lip movements in the same production process. The company also claims improvements in visual realism, motion consistency and rendering speed.

The model recently topped the Artificial Analysis Video Arena Image-to-Video leaderboard, surpassing competing systems including ByteDance’s Seedance 2.0. Supporters argue that advances such as these are rapidly narrowing the gap between AI-generated content and traditional filmmaking workflows.

The technology is powered by xAI’s expanding computing infrastructure, including its Colossus supercomputing platform, which is designed to handle large-scale AI training and content generation tasks.

While Hollywood filmmakers continue to emphasise the importance of human creativity, storytelling and craftsmanship, AI proponents see tools like Grok as the beginning of a new era in content creation. They argue that sophisticated visual storytelling is becoming increasingly accessible to independent creators without the budgets typically required for large studio productions.

Whether Musk’s trailer is remembered as a technological curiosity or an early glimpse into the future of filmmaking remains to be seen. What is clear, however, is that the conversation around AI and cinema is no longer hypothetical. As generative tools become more powerful, the distance between a blockbuster film set and a creator with a powerful AI model continues to shrink.
