MUMBAI: Elon Musk is putting a billion-dollar bet on Hollywood, with the tech billionaire reportedly investing $1 billion in Skydance as the entertainment group looks to bring technology and showbusiness closer together. The reported investment comes at a pivotal moment for the company, which has just completed a $110 billion takeover of Warner Bros Discovery and is now preparing to integrate a sprawling portfolio of media and entertainment assets.

CNBC reported on Thursday, citing a person familiar with the matter, that Musk had invested approximately $1 billion in Skydance. The terms and structure of the reported investment have not been disclosed, leaving open questions about the size of his stake, the precise arrangement and any role he may play in the company’s future.

The investment comes as Skydance seeks to position itself as a technology-driven entertainment business under chief executive David Ellison. Following the completion of the Warner Bros Discovery takeover earlier this month, the combined entity brings major entertainment and media assets under one corporate roof, raising the stakes for its integration plans and future strategy.

For Skydance, the challenge is no small production. Combining businesses on this scale means managing costs, aligning operations and finding ways to make a much larger portfolio work together. Technology is expected to play a central role in that effort, while the company attempts to strengthen its position in an entertainment industry facing rapid changes in distribution, audience behaviour and content consumption.

Musk’s reported investment adds a prominent technology figure to that equation. The chief executive of SpaceX and owner of X has built businesses around rockets, electric vehicles, social media and artificial intelligence. His reported move into Skydance introduces another potential link between technology capital and the entertainment business, although the available information does not specify how his investment will influence the company’s operations or technology strategy.

The deal also brings an established relationship into focus. Musk has longstanding ties with Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, whose son David leads Skydance. Larry Ellison has previously backed Musk financially, including during the latter’s acquisition of Twitter in 2022.

At that time, Larry Ellison committed $1 billion to help finance Musk’s purchase of the social media platform, which was subsequently renamed X. In 2018, the Oracle co-founder had described himself as a close friend of Musk.

The connection is relevant because Larry Ellison has also played a significant financial role in the wider Paramount-Warner Bros Discovery transaction. He personally guaranteed more than $40 billion in equity financing when Paramount made its bid for Warner Bros Discovery in 2025.

These links put the reported investment in a broader context of relationships and capital that have helped shape the dealmaking around Skydance. However, Larry Ellison’s earlier commitments and financial guarantees should not be confused with the reported $1 billion investment by Musk, whose terms have not been made public.

The Warner Bros Discovery takeover marks a major expansion for Skydance. The combined group now has a broader collection of entertainment and media assets to manage, making the integration process a central test for David Ellison and his leadership team.

Last month, Ellison named former Mattel chief executive Ynon Kreiz as Skydance’s co-chief executive. The appointment comes as the company seeks to streamline its operations and pursue a strategy that places greater emphasis on technology.

Kreiz’s experience leading Mattel adds another executive perspective to a business navigating the intersection of entertainment, intellectual property and consumer engagement. The company has not, however, disclosed specific responsibilities linked to Musk’s reported investment or indicated whether the investment will result in changes to its leadership structure.

The scale of the merger makes cost control an important part of the task ahead. Integrating businesses of this size can involve consolidating overlapping operations, aligning technology systems and reviewing how resources are allocated across the group. Skydance has been looking to reduce costs while concentrating on its technology-led ambitions, although the information available does not provide a detailed breakdown of its planned savings or integration timetable.

The strategy also comes at a time when entertainment companies are increasingly exploring technology to improve production, distribution and audience engagement. Artificial intelligence and data-driven tools are among the areas attracting industry attention, but there is no disclosed indication that Musk’s reported investment is earmarked for any particular technology initiative.

The reported investment also comes as Musk rebuilds his ties with US President Donald Trump. Trump expressed support for the Paramount-Warner Bros Discovery merger earlier this month, describing the combined company as one that would be successful.

The political backdrop adds another dimension to a transaction involving some of the entertainment industry’s largest assets. Nevertheless, the available information does not establish that Trump’s support for the merger was connected to Musk’s reported investment, or that the investment was influenced by political considerations.

For Skydance, the immediate priority remains turning the expanded group’s scale into a workable business. The Warner Bros Discovery acquisition brings together a significant collection of media and entertainment assets, but the benefits of such a combination will depend on how effectively the businesses are integrated and whether the enlarged group can manage costs while pursuing new growth opportunities.

Musk’s reported $1 billion contribution would represent a substantial investment in that transition. Yet, without details of the arrangement, it is too early to determine whether it gives him a direct role in strategic decisions or signals a deeper partnership between his technology businesses and Skydance.

The larger story is the convergence of two industries that have increasingly found themselves on the same playing field. Entertainment companies need technology to reach audiences and operate more efficiently, while technology entrepreneurs continue to explore the influence and commercial potential of media platforms and content.

Skydance now has the scale of a $110 billion takeover to absorb, a technology-led strategy to pursue and a reported $1 billion investment from one of the world’s most prominent technology entrepreneurs. The money makes headlines, but the real test will be what the newly combined company can build with it.
