Dorothy teaser debuts ahead of Toronto film festival world premiere

MUMBAI: Every journey begins with a glimpse and sometimes a teaser says just enough to leave you wanting the full story. Karthik Subbaraj’s Dorothy has done exactly that, stepping into the spotlight ahead of its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2026.

Jio Studios and Sikhya Entertainment have unveiled the first teaser for Dorothy, offering audiences an early look at filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj’s landmark 10th feature film before it makes its world premiere at the 2026 Toronto International Film Festival.

The Tamil-language drama has been selected for TIFF’s Centrepiece section, which showcases acclaimed filmmakers and highly anticipated world premieres from around the world. Following its festival debut, the film is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on 25 September 2026.

Written and directed by Subbaraj, Dorothy is set in rural India during the early 1990s and explores themes of caste, violence, prejudice, friendship and compassion. The story follows an enduring friendship tested by deep social divisions, asking whether humanity can survive in a world fractured by hate.

The newly released teaser hints at the film’s emotionally charged narrative through striking visuals and a restrained yet intense atmosphere, offering only a glimpse of the world Subbaraj has crafted while leaving much of the story under wraps.

Adding another layer to the film is an original score by Ilaiyaraaja, marking the legendary composer’s 1,540th film, with the music expected to play a central role in the emotional arc of the narrative.

The film stars Sananth, Rishikanth and Keerthy Suresh in pivotal roles and is produced by Jyoti Deshpande, Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain in association with Dhammam Films. It also marks the first collaboration between Jio Studios and Sikhya Entertainment following Jio Studios’ investment in the Oscar-winning production house.

Speaking about the teaser, Subbaraj said Dorothy had been a deeply personal project that had stayed with him for years. While rooted in a specific place and period, he said the emotions driving the story are universal and hoped the teaser would draw audiences into its world ahead of the film’s release.

Jio Studios President Jyoti Deshpande described the teaser as an introduction to the film’s distinctive cinematic voice, while Sikhya Entertainment producers Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain said the project reflects Subbaraj’s long-standing commitment to telling deeply human stories through compelling cinema.

With a coveted TIFF Centrepiece slot, a celebrated filmmaker behind the camera and Ilaiyaraaja’s milestone soundtrack, Dorothy is positioning itself as one of the notable Indian films to watch on the international festival circuit before arriving in cinemas later this year.
