Disney to open Avengers Doomsday premium tickets five months early
Infinity Vision tickets go on sale July 20 as Marvel sequel gets 165-minute runtime
MUMBAI: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are assembling early and so are the queues. Disney is set to begin selling premium-format tickets for Avengers: Doomsday nearly five months before its theatrical release, signalling one of Marvel’s most ambitious pre-release campaigns yet.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the studio will open domestic ticket sales for Infinity Vision theatres on July 20, making the premium-format seats available well ahead of the film’s December 18 release.
The move marks the debut of Disney’s Infinity Vision large-format branding, introduced after Warner Bros. secured IMAX screens for Dune: Part III for three weeks following both films’ release. By launching its own premium format, Disney is looking to strengthen its position in the battle for high-value cinema audiences.
The early ticket rollout has also revealed the film’s reported runtime of 165 minutes or 2 hours and 45 minutes. While the final cut could still undergo minor changes, the duration places Avengers: Doomsday between 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War (149 minutes) and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame (181 minutes).
Adding to the momentum, Disney will also bring Avengers: Endgame back to cinemas on September 25 under the title Avengers: Endgame Encore, with Infinity Vision screenings forming part of the re-release. The 2019 blockbuster remains the second highest-grossing film of all time, earning $2.8 billion worldwide, behind only 2009’s Avatar.
Marvel Studios declined to comment on the report.
The ticket launch is expected to build anticipation ahead of Marvel Studios’ presentation at San Diego Comic-Con on July 25, where the studio is widely expected to unveil the first full trailer for Avengers: Doomsday during its return to Hall H. An online release of the trailer is also considered likely given the unusually early ticket sales.
The strategy follows a growing trend in Hollywood of turning advance ticket sales into marketing events. Earlier this year, Universal Pictures generated buzz by releasing select IMAX tickets for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey a full year before its release.
Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, Avengers: Doomsday reunites Marvel’s biggest heroes against a new multiversal threat led by Doctor Doom, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. in a dramatic return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The ensemble cast includes Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Paul Rudd, Pedro Pascal, Anthony Mackie, Tom Hiddleston, Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Vanessa Kirby, Simu Liu, Letitia Wright, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and Rebecca Romijn, among others.
With premium tickets arriving months before opening night, Disney is making one thing clear: for Marvel fans, the countdown to Avengers: Doomsday has already begun.
