Dave Bautista officially joins Prime Video’s God of War as Kratos
The actor replaces Ryan Hurst after a serious stunt injury forces production to restart
NEW DELHI: From Drax to the God of War, Dave Bautista is taking on another formidable role. The actor has officially closed his deal to play Kratos in Prime Video’s live-action God of War series, replacing Ryan Hurst after an injury forced the production to be reset.
Hurst, who had originally been cast as the Ghost of Sparta, suffered a severe bicep tear while performing a stunt during production in Vancouver. The injury reportedly required surgery and around six months of physical therapy.
Production was already about four months underway, with roughly four episodes filmed, when the injury prompted Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television to reconsider the schedule. Rather than delay the series until late 2027, the studios opted to recast the central role and restart production.
All footage previously shot with Hurst is being scrapped, with the series effectively returning to the starting line.
Bautista will now step into the physically demanding role of Kratos, the former Spartan warrior who becomes embroiled in the mythology of the Norse gods.
The actor has previously spoken about his interest in leading a major video game adaptation, making the role a significant addition to his growing film and television career.
The series is based on the Norse era of the God of War franchise, drawing primarily from the 2018 game and God of War Ragnarök. It follows Kratos and his son Atreus as they set out to scatter the ashes of Faye, Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother.
Their journey brings them into conflict with the powerful Norse pantheon, setting up a story that combines family drama, mythology and large-scale action.
Despite the major recast, the creative team is largely staying in place.
Prep work is scheduled to begin this month, with filming expected to resume in mid-October. Emmy-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye, whose credits include Shōgun and Fallout, is returning to direct the first two episodes.
The production reset means there is currently no official release date for the series.
Bautista will join a cast that includes Callum Vinson as Atreus, Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur and Sonya Walger as Freya.
Ólafur Darri Ólafsson is set to play Thor, while Max Parker will portray Heimdall. Alastair Duncan is Mimir, with Danny Woodburn and Jeff Gulka playing Brok and Sindri respectively.
The recasting gives God of War a fresh start after months of production, but also puts Bautista at the centre of one of Prime Video’s most ambitious video game adaptations. For now, the gods will have to wait a little longer for their showdown with Kratos.
