MUMBAI: The cash registers kept ringing and the ghosts kept grinning. April 2026 delivered another solid month for Indian cinemas, with films released during the month grossing Rs 787 crore at the domestic box office, including projected future collections. Leading the charge were Bhooth Bangla and Vaazha 2, which together accounted for a formidable 43 per cent of the month’s total earnings.

The strong showing has helped push the cumulative Indian box office for 2026 to Rs 4,219 crore, marking a 15 per cent increase over the same period last year and reinforcing the industry’s steady recovery momentum.

Topping the charts was Bhooth Bangla, which emerged as April’s highest-grossing release, followed closely by Vaazha 2. Beyond the top two, only two other films managed to breach the coveted ₹50 crore mark Michael, the much-anticipated biopic on music icon Michael Jackson, and Tamil entertainer Love Insurance Kompany.

Language-wise, Hindi cinema continued to dominate the box office conversation. The industry claimed 50 per cent of the total market share in 2026 and occupied the top two positions among the year’s biggest hits so far. The April top 10 featured four Hindi films, three Telugu releases, one Malayalam film, and two international titles, highlighting the increasingly diverse tastes of Indian moviegoers.

Malayalam cinema recorded one of the month’s biggest gains, doubling its market share from 4 per cent in March to 8 per cent by April. Hollywood too enjoyed a boost, powered by the performances of Project Hail Mary in March and Michael in April.

The report also underscores how box-office success is increasingly spread across languages and genres. While star-driven Hindi films remain the industry’s biggest draw, regional cinema and international releases continue to carve out larger audiences.

As theatres look ahead to the summer slate, April’s numbers suggest Indian audiences remain willing to turn up for compelling stories whether they come wrapped in comedy, music, action, romance or a haunted bungalow.
