Awarapan 2 crosses Rs 100 crore to become Emraan Hashmi’s biggest hit
The sequel earns Rs 113.50 crore in its first week after opening on August 14
MUMBAI: Emraan Hashmi’s box-office fortunes have found a new twist. Awarapan 2 has crossed the Rs 100 crore mark in India within its first week, making it the actor’s biggest theatrical success to date.
Released on 14 August, the Nitin Kakkar directorial collected Rs 113.50 crore net domestically by the end of Thursday, according to the figures provided. The film has maintained a strong run despite slowing during the weekdays.
The sequel entered theatres with more than Rs 8 crore in advance bookings before collecting over Rs 81 crore net during its opening weekend. After the expected weekday dip, the film regained some momentum on Thursday, adding Rs 6 crore net on Day 7 and taking its first-week tally to Rs 113.50 crore.
For Hashmi, the milestone marks a career high. Awarapan 2 is his first film to cross Rs 100 crore, comfortably overtaking his previous solo best, Raaz 3, which ended its theatrical run at Rs 70 crore net.
His other major theatrical performer, Baadshaho, in which he shared the lead with Ajay Devgn and Vidyut Jammwal, collected Rs 82 crore net.
Awarapan 2 follows the 2007 film Awarapan and brings Hashmi back as Shivam Pandit, with Disha Patani and Shabana Azmi also starring. The film is produced by Vishesh Bhatt under the Vishesh Films banner.
The film’s ending has also left the door open for another chapter, with Shivam placed in a vulnerable position during the final stretch. If the box-office momentum continues, the franchise may have more mileage left in the tank.
For now, though, Awarapan 2 has already achieved something its predecessor and Hashmi’s earlier films could not — taking the actor past the Rs 100 crore milestone.
