MUMBAI: On Pandora, even the biggest blue giants have to watch their backs. James Cameron has congratulated Marvel Studios after Avengers: Endgame reclaimed its place as the world’s highest-grossing film, overtaking Avatar following a theatrical re-release that has reignited one of cinema’s longest-running box office rivalries.

Cameron marked the moment on Instagram with an image of Iron Man surrounded by the Na’vi, bringing Marvel’s armoured superhero into the world of Pandora. “You are one of the people,” the post read, alongside a message congratulating Marvel and Avengers: Endgame: Encore for bringing moviegoers back to cinemas. Signed off as “Jim Cameron”, the post struck a friendly note in a contest that has repeatedly seen the two blockbusters trade places at the top.

According to Box Office Mojo’s worldwide lifetime chart, Avengers: Endgame now leads with $2.938 billion in global earnings, while Avatar sits second with $2.923 billion. The difference is $15 million, leaving both films within striking distance of the much-talked-about $3 billion milestone.

The latest reversal follows the release of Avengers: Endgame Encore, which brought the 2019 Marvel blockbuster back to cinemas with additional footage. The re-release gave audiences another reason to revisit the film while helping Marvel build anticipation for Avengers: Doomsday, scheduled for release in December. The strategy appears to have paid off at the box office, even though the film reportedly experienced a substantial drop in its second weekend of the re-release.

The rivalry between Endgame and Avatar dates back to 2019, when the Marvel film initially overtook Cameron’s science-fiction epic to become the highest-grossing movie worldwide. Cameron responded with a congratulatory message at the time, but later predicted that Avatar would reclaim the record. It did so in 2021 following a re-release, proving that the box office crown could change hands long after a film’s original theatrical run.

Since then, both franchises have continued to draw audiences. Avatar: The Way of Water expanded Cameron’s cinematic universe, followed by Avatar: Fire and Ash, while Marvel continued to develop its interconnected superhero slate. Now, with Endgame back on top, the contest has once again become a story of theatrical longevity as much as opening-weekend performance.

The latest re-release also illustrates how studios can use established franchises to generate fresh cinema-going interest. By adding bonus footage to a familiar blockbuster, Marvel has given fans an incentive to return to a film they may already have watched, while connecting that revisit to the next chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The reported box office figures place both films well ahead of the third-ranked title in the supplied worldwide chart, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is listed at $2.513 billion. The gap underscores the scale of the achievement for both Endgame and Avatar, even as their close contest keeps the record in play.

For Cameron, the result is familiar territory. His 2009 film has repeatedly returned to the top after additional theatrical runs, while Endgame has now reclaimed the lead through its own return to cinemas. Whether the two films trade places yet again remains uncertain, but their proximity to $3 billion gives the race another milestone to chase.

The box office battle has also generated a friendly exchange between filmmakers and studios rather than an outright war of words. Cameron’s latest post acknowledges Marvel’s achievement while recognising the role theatrical releases continue to play in bringing audiences together. In a market where streaming has changed viewing habits, the ability of two older blockbusters to command renewed attention offers a reminder that familiar stories can still draw crowds back to the big screen.

For those comparing the films on review scores, IGN awarded Avengers: Endgame 9.5 out of 10 when it released in 2019, while Avatar received 9 out of 10 in 2009. Those ratings are a separate measure from commercial success, but they add another dimension to the debate over which blockbuster has left the stronger impression.

For now, Marvel has the crown, Cameron has offered his congratulations, and Pandora is once again chasing Earth’s mightiest heroes. With Avengers: Endgame at $2.938 billion and Avatar at $2.923 billion, the contest remains close enough to keep the box office conversation alive and perhaps set the stage for another change of throne.
