MUMBAI: It seems the real-life drama behind OpenAI’s boardroom battle has found its way off-screen too. Amazon MGM Studios has stepped away from Artificial, the upcoming film based on the tumultuous leadership crisis that briefly saw OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman ousted before making a dramatic return in 2023. The studio is now working with the filmmakers to find a new distribution partner for the project, even as production has already wrapped.

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Luca Guadagnino and written by Simon Rich, Artificial revisits one of Silicon Valley’s most closely watched corporate sagas — the November 2023 boardroom revolt that removed Altman from OpenAI, only for him to be reinstated less than a week later following employee backlash and investor pressure.

While the film’s story centres on Altman’s dramatic fall-and-return arc, it also shines a spotlight on the key figures who shaped the crisis. Andrew Garfield stars as Altman, with Monica Barbaro portraying former OpenAI chief technology officer Mira Murati. Yura Borisov plays OpenAI co-founder and former chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, who was among the board members involved in Altman’s removal before later exiting the board himself. Ike Barinholtz takes on the role of Elon Musk, whose complex relationship with OpenAI has remained a point of public fascination.

In a statement, Amazon said it continues to hold Guadagnino in high regard and hopes to collaborate with him on future projects. However, the company believes Artificial would be better served under a different studio and is actively helping the production team secure a new home ahead of release.

The move comes at an interesting moment. Earlier this year, Amazon and OpenAI deepened their commercial ties through a major cloud-computing and investment partnership. While the timing has inevitably raised eyebrows, Amazon has not cited any connection between that relationship and its decision to exit the film.

The project boasts an ensemble cast that includes Cooper Hoffman, Jason Schwartzman, Cooper Koch, Billie Lourd, Zosia Mamet, Angus Imrie, Chris O’Dowd and Mark Rylance, further underscoring Hollywood’s growing fascination with the personalities shaping the artificial intelligence revolution.

As the AI race intensifies globally, Artificial promises to offer audiences a behind-the-scenes look at the boardroom intrigue, power struggles and competing visions that nearly reshaped one of the world’s most influential technology companies.

For now, the cameras may have stopped rolling, but the search for a distributor means Artificial is still navigating a plot twist of its own before reaching the big screen.
