MUMBAI: Strength comes in many forms, and Indian cinema has spent years putting some of its strongest women centre stage. Keyaa Banerji’s silver-medal performance at the 2026 World Championships, where the 21-year-old lifted 140kg, more than three times her body weight, is the latest reminder of the physical and mental barriers female athletes continue to overcome.

Her achievement also drew intense online scrutiny, highlighting how women in sport often face challenges well beyond the playing field.

Indian cinema has explored many of those battles, from patriarchal expectations and unequal recognition to institutional barriers and the struggle to return after motherhood. Here are seven films that celebrate the resilience of female athletes.

1. Dangal: Wrestling

Dangal brings the story of Geeta and Babita Phogat to the big screen, following their journey from a rural Haryana household to international wrestling success.

The film, starring Aamir Khan, goes beyond wrestling bouts to explore entrenched gender expectations and the resistance faced by women entering a traditionally male-dominated sport. Under their father’s demanding mentorship, the sisters learn that sporting ambition does not have to follow society’s rulebook.

2. Mary Kom: Boxing

Mary Kom chronicles the life of the celebrated boxer from Manipur, played by Priyanka Chopra.

The film follows Mary Kom’s rise from a small-town athlete to a world champion while examining the personal sacrifices involved in reaching the top. It also focuses on her determination to return to competitive boxing after motherhood, making her comeback as important as her victories inside the ring.

3. Shabaash Mithu: Cricket

Shabaash Mithu tells the story of Mithali Raj, one of India’s most influential women cricketers and former captain of the national team.

The film explores her journey through a cricketing system where the women’s game struggled for the recognition and resources enjoyed by its male counterpart. Her pursuit of respect and equal treatment forms a central part of the story.

4. Rashmi Rocket: Track and field

Rashmi Rocket takes a different route from the conventional underdog sports story.

Starring Taapsee Pannu, the film follows a gifted sprinter whose career is disrupted by mandatory gender verification testing. Inspired by real-world debates surrounding hyperandrogenism in sport, it examines the personal consequences of rules that can place an athlete’s body and identity under intense scrutiny.

5. Chak De! India: Field hockey

Chak De! India remains one of India’s most celebrated sports films.

The fictional story follows a women’s national hockey team made up of players from different regions and backgrounds. As the players confront regional differences, internal rivalries and doubts about their abilities, they gradually come together as a team.

The film’s larger message is simple: talent can come from anywhere, but teamwork can take it much further.

6. Saand Ki Aankh: Shooting

Saand Ki Aankh tells the remarkable story of Chandro and Prakashi Tomar, who took up competitive shooting in their 60s.

Played by Taapsee Pannu and Bhumi Pednekar, the film portrays their journey from domestic life in Uttar Pradesh to competitive shooting, as well as their efforts to challenge traditional expectations placed on women.

Their story is as much about opening doors for future generations as it is about winning shooting competitions.

7. Saala Khadoos / Irudhi Suttru: Boxing

Saala Khadoos, released simultaneously in Tamil as Irudhi Suttru, follows a rebellious young fisherwoman who is discovered by a disgraced boxing coach.

The protagonist’s raw talent and fierce independence drive the story as she attempts to make her mark in a system plagued by politics and corruption. The film pairs the physical demands of boxing with a broader fight against institutions that can make sporting success harder to achieve.

From the wrestling mat to the boxing ring and the hockey field, these films put female athletes at the heart of stories about ambition, resistance and resilience. Their message remains relevant as India’s women athletes continue to challenge expectations, break records and, sometimes, simply demand the right to compete on their own terms.
