MUMBAI: Jump Street is finally jumping back into action, and this time the wait comes with a date. Sony has confirmed that 24 Jump Street, the long-awaited third entry in the Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum buddy-cop franchise, will release on 10 December 2027.

Hill and Tatum are set to return as undercover officers Schmidt and Jenko, with Ice Cube also reprising his role. The film was officially announced earlier this year after years of speculation around whether the franchise would ever make it back to the big screen.

Despite the 24 Jump Street title, the upcoming film is actually the third instalment in the series. The previous two films, 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street, arrived in 2012 and 2014 respectively, leaving more than a decade between the last film and the upcoming sequel.

The franchise had already flirted with a very different third chapter in the 2010s. A planned crossover would have brought the Jump Street characters together with the Men in Black franchise, but those plans ultimately fell apart.

The new film instead comes from Jonah Hill and Meghan Malloy, who have written the screenplay. Rodney Rothman, who co-directed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, is attached to direct, giving the comedy franchise a new filmmaker while retaining its central stars.

Sony has not yet revealed the full cast beyond the returning names, nor has it disclosed the plot. The long gap between films could, however, create its own comic material for a franchise that has never been shy about making fun of its protagonists’ age.

The first two films built much of their humour around Hill and Tatum looking considerably older than the high-school and college students they were attempting to portray while working undercover. With the actors now returning more than a decade after the second film, that self-aware joke could become even harder to ignore.

The new film also arrives after years of uncertainty surrounding the franchise. Following 22 Jump Street, the proposed Men in Black crossover became one of several attempts to extend the series, but the project never reached production.

The decision to make another conventional Jump Street sequel instead brings the focus back to the chemistry between Hill and Tatum. Their mismatched buddy-cop dynamic was central to both earlier films, with the series mixing action, undercover missions and deliberately irreverent comedy.

The December 2027 release also places 24 Jump Street in a potentially busy theatrical period. The film is currently scheduled to open around the same time as Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Secret Wars, although the release schedules for films that far out remain subject to change.

That potential clash could make the theatrical landscape particularly crowded when 24 Jump Street arrives. For now, however, Sony has planted its flag on 10 December 2027, giving the franchise a firm target after years of uncertainty.

The new instalment also arrives at a time when R-rated studio comedies have become less frequent on the big screen. The return of a franchise with an established comedy identity could therefore test whether audiences still have an appetite for this particular kind of theatrical release.

With production expected to move towards filming ahead of the December 2027 launch, further casting and story details could emerge as the project progresses. For fans who assumed the Jump Street story had already driven off into the sunset, the franchise now has one more stop on its route.
