Wipro completes METRO AG cloud migration to power AI-first transformation
Multi-year programme delivers scalable cloud foundation for automation and AI adoption
BENGALURU: Wipro Limited has successfully completed a large-scale, multi-year data centre migration programme for METRO AG, marking a major milestone in the wholesaler’s journey towards becoming an AI-first enterprise.
The project forms a central part of METRO’s cloud-first strategy and long-term digital transformation roadmap. Under the engagement, Wipro migrated the company’s IT operations from legacy data centres to a modern multi-cloud ecosystem through a phased and risk-controlled approach.
The migration is designed to provide METRO with a more resilient, scalable and secure digital infrastructure while laying the groundwork for future AI adoption, automation and innovation initiatives.
Commenting on the achievement, METRO AG chief information officer Khaled Bagban said, “The successful completion of this program marks a key milestone in METRO’s transformation journey towards a scalable, cloud-based and AI-ready IT landscape. Together with Wipro and our partner ecosystem, we have established a resilient and future-ready digital foundation that enables us to accelerate innovation and drive AI adoption at scale.”
Beyond infrastructure modernisation, the programme has introduced intelligent automation across several operational areas, including user lifecycle management. Using Wipro Intelligence, Wipro’s AI-powered platform suite, service requests can now be managed more autonomously, helping improve turnaround times, accuracy and operational efficiency.
Wipro has also deployed AI-driven engineering tools to speed up software development, improve code quality and enable quicker issue resolution. These capabilities allow METRO to identify recurring operational patterns, strengthen decision-making processes and improve the overall reliability of its technology environment.
Highlighting the significance of the partnership, Wipro Limited chief executive officer – Europe Omkar Nisal said, “Our long-standing partnership with METRO reflects Wipro’s ability to deliver large-scale enterprise transformation with precision, resiliency and measurable impact. As METRO enters its next era of AI-powered transformation, Wipro Intelligence™ will play a pivotal role in unlocking greater business value, enabling smarter decision-making and accelerating innovation at scale.”
The transformation was also supported by Google Cloud, which provided the cloud infrastructure underpinning the migration.
Google Cloud president EMEA Tara Brady said, “METRO’s successful data center exit is a benchmark for enterprise modernization across Europe. With a Google Cloud foundation, METRO has not only eliminated legacy infrastructure constraints but has strategically positioned itself to lead in the AI era.”
The latest milestone builds on a partnership that began in 2020 and was extended in 2025. As enterprises increasingly race to modernise ageing infrastructure and prepare for AI-driven operations, the completion of METRO’s cloud migration highlights how large-scale transformation projects are shifting from technology upgrades to strategic business enablers.
