MUMBAI: Tata Electronics and Dutch semiconductor equipment giant ASML have signed a strategic partnership to accelerate India’s semiconductor manufacturing ambitions, with a sharp focus on the country’s first commercial 300 mm chip fabrication facility coming up in Dholera.

The collaboration will see ASML provide its advanced lithography tools and solutions for Tata Electronics’ upcoming semiconductor fab in Gujarat, while also supporting talent development, research capabilities and supply chain resilience in India’s emerging chip ecosystem.

The partnership marks a major step in India’s efforts to build a domestic semiconductor manufacturing base as the country pushes to reduce import dependence and position itself as a global electronics and chipmaking hub.

Tata Electronics CEO & MD Randhir Thakur. said the collaboration with ASML would help ensure the timely ramp-up of the Dholera fab while strengthening India’s semiconductor supply chain and manufacturing capabilities.

He added that the partnership reflects a shared commitment towards quality, innovation and manufacturing excellence, all of which are critical for building a globally competitive semiconductor ecosystem in the country.

ASML president & CEO Christophe Fouquet, said India’s rapidly expanding semiconductor sector presents significant opportunities and described the agreement as an important milestone in the company’s long-term engagement with the region.

The Dholera facility, being developed with an estimated investment of $11 billion, is expected to manufacture semiconductors for sectors including automotive, mobile devices, artificial intelligence and advanced electronics.

Tata Electronics has already partnered with Taiwan-based Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation (PSMC) to access a broad technology portfolio spanning 28nm to 110nm process nodes.

Beyond equipment deployment, the Tata-ASML partnership also places strong emphasis on talent creation. The companies plan to jointly support lithography-focused skill development programmes, strengthen R&D infrastructure and create a pipeline of semiconductor specialists within India.

Lithography remains one of the most complex and strategically important aspects of semiconductor manufacturing, often described as the technology that quite literally prints the future of computing onto silicon wafers.

As India races to carve out a place in the global semiconductor map, partnerships such as this one signal that the country’s chip ambitions are steadily moving from policy decks to production floors.
