MUMBAI: Sometimes the biggest competition begins before the first search is even typed. Google is once again facing antitrust questions, this time in Switzerland, where regulators are examining whether the company’s default settings on Android devices are quietly tilting the playing field in its favour.

Switzerland’s Competition Commission (COMCO) has opened a preliminary inquiry into Google’s decision to remove the search engine selection screen for new Android users in the country, according to a Reuters report. The regulator will assess whether the move could weaken competition in the online search market.

Previously, users setting up a new Android device in Switzerland were presented with a choice of search engines before selecting a default option. COMCO said that feature has now been withdrawn, with Google Search automatically becoming the default search service during device setup.

The regulator believes default settings can have a significant influence on consumer behaviour and market competition. Without a choice screen, rival search providers could find it more difficult to reach users at the critical moment when they configure a new device, potentially reinforcing Google’s dominant position.

COMCO also highlighted that Android users across the European Economic Area (EEA) continue to receive the search engine selection screen, prompting questions over why Swiss consumers are no longer offered the same option despite operating within a closely connected digital ecosystem.

The inquiry will examine whether Google’s decision complies with the Swiss Cartel Act. At this stage, the competition watchdog has not accused the company of any wrongdoing. Instead, the preliminary investigation is intended to determine whether sufficient grounds exist to launch a formal antitrust case.

Responding to the development, Google said it is aware of the regulator’s concerns and will cooperate fully with the review. The company added that it intends to work closely with COMCO as the authority examines the matter.

The latest scrutiny adds to Google’s long-running regulatory challenges across global markets, where competition authorities continue to closely examine how default settings, platform design and ecosystem control influence consumer choice and competition in digital services.
