MUMBAI: Sun TV Network has approved the reappointment of Kalanithi Maran as its whole-time director and executive chairman for another five years, extending his tenure from 20 April 2027 to 19 April 2032.

The board has also approved a fresh five-year term for Kavery Kalanithi as whole-time director and executive director over the same period. Both reappointments are subject to shareholder approval through a postal ballot.

The decisions were taken on the recommendations of the company’s nomination and remuneration committee.

Maran, 61, holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Madras and an MBA from the University of Scranton in Pennsylvania, US. He founded Sun TV in Tamil on 14 April 1993, initially launching a single channel with three hours of daily programming. The network has since expanded to 37 channels across seven Indian languages.

Under his leadership, Sun TV Network has grown into one of India’s largest television broadcasters. Maran has received several industry honours, including the TiE Entrepreneur of the Year award in 2009, an entrepreneurship award instituted by CNBC Television in 2005 and Ernst & Young’s Outstanding Businessman Award in the entertainment and information sector in 2004.

Kavery Kalanithi, 57, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Madras. She is involved in Sun TV Network’s business and operations, including monitoring viewer feedback, deciding programming content mixes and participating in the selection of anchors, newscasters and programme presenters.

She is also associated with the Sun Foundation, a public charitable organisation, where she serves on the board of trustees and oversees its day-to-day functioning.

Kavery is the spouse of Kalanithi Maran and mother of Kaviya Kalanithi Maran, who is also an executive director of Sun TV Network.

The reappointments ensure continuity in Sun TV Network’s top leadership for another five years, subject to shareholder approval. With Kalanithi Maran at the helm and Kavery Kalanithi continuing as executive director, the broadcaster retains its existing leadership structure as it navigates an evolving television and digital media landscape.
