MUMBAI: An advertising industry dispute has now moved from headlines to legal lines. Advertising veteran Srinivasan K. Swamy has put exchange4media on notice, alleging that a series of reports and interviews published between May and August 2026 amounted to a sustained and orchestrated campaign that damaged his reputation.

In a strongly worded legal notice dated August 31, 2026, Swamy’s counsel has challenged the publication’s coverage of the Advertising Agencies Association of India (AAAI) 2026 Lifetime Achievement Award, along with reports concerning Swamy’s professional positions and conduct.

The notice disputes what the legal team describes as a one-sided narrative around the award and alleges that articles repeatedly raised questions of favouritism, governance, cartelisation and manipulation without adequate factual basis. These remain allegations made by Swamy’s legal team and have not been established by a court.

The dispute also brings Sandeep Goyal and Tanya Goyal into the picture. Swamy’s counsel has alleged that exchange4media and Anuraag Batra’s digital media network gave extensive coverage to Goyal’s views around the AAAI award, including an article by Batra supporting Goyal’s candidature. The notice further alleges that Tanya Goyal was seeking nominations in support of Sandeep Goyal. These claims are contested matters raised in the legal notice.

One of the central issues raised by Swamy’s lawyers is the use of unnamed sources in the disputed reports.

The notice refers to descriptions such as “senior agency executives”, “industry veterans” and “senior media industry executives requesting anonymity”, and challenges the publication to disclose the identities of those sources and explain how their allegations were verified.

Swamy’s counsel has also sought details of the editorial process, including the commissioning, sourcing and publication of the reports. The notice asks for information on any alleged payment, inducement, briefing, draft or instruction involving Tanya Goyal, Sandeep Goyal or people associated with them.

If the matter reaches court, the questions surrounding sourcing and verification could therefore become a key battleground.

The legal notice also specifically refers to an August 14 exchange4media article titled “Drinking heavily in public shows bad upbringing: Tanya Goyal hits back at Srinivasan Swamy.”

Swamy’s lawyers argue that the report went beyond coverage of an industry disagreement and crossed into commentary on his personal character. They have objected to what they describe as the language and tenor of the article and associated quotes.

The notice contends that the reporting failed to adequately reflect Swamy’s professional achievements and standing in the advertising industry.

His legal team has also highlighted Swamy’s long association with industry and professional bodies.

According to the notice, Swamy has served as Chairman and World President of the International Advertising Association (IAA) and chaired the Confederation of Advertising Agencies Associations of Asia and the Asian Federation of Advertising Associations (AFAA). His leadership and association with institutions including the Advertising Standards Council of India, Audit Bureau of Circulations, India Chapter of IAA, All India Management Association, Madras Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Madras Management Association and Advertising Club, Madras have also been cited.

Swamy served three terms as President of AAAI between 2004 and 2007 and returned to lead the association in 2025-26, after an 18-year gap, according to the material in the notice.

The legal document also points to several international honours associated with Swamy, including the IAA Golden Compass Award, the International Honour Award from AD STARS, Korea, and a Certificate of Appreciation from the Japan Advertising Association.

It further cites his induction into the AFAA Hall of Fame and IAA Hall of Fame, along with the AFAA Special Merit Award, IAA Special North Star Medal, IAA Force for Good Award and Distinguished Service Award from Advertising Club Madras.

His counsel argues that this record, built over decades, should be considered in assessing the impact of the allegations published about him.

Swamy’s lawyers have given exchange4media seven days to respond to the notice.

The demands include removing the allegedly defamatory material from the publication’s platforms and associated digital channels, issuing an unconditional apology and retraction, and taking steps concerning copies or syndication of the material elsewhere.

The notice also seeks information about the sources behind the disputed allegations.

According to the legal notice, failure to comply could result in civil and criminal proceedings, including claims seeking injunctions and damages for alleged harm to Swamy’s reputation and goodwill.

At its core, the dispute has now grown beyond the AAAI award itself. It pits questions of editorial sourcing, verification and industry reporting against allegations of reputational targeting — leaving the advertising fraternity to watch whether this particular war of words stays in the pages or moves into the courtroom.
