CHENNAI: Economic uncertainty is becoming a business variable, not a background noise. For a financial conglomerate operating across credit, insurance, asset management and wealth, understanding where the economy is heading can be as important as knowing where it has been. Shriram Group is responding by putting research closer to the centre of its strategy.

The group has appointed Dr. Apoorva Javadekar as chief economist, Shriram Group, and chief executive officer, Shriram Research. The move signals a sharper push towards research-led decision-making, with Javadekar tasked with leading the group’s macroeconomic and financial markets research while strengthening policy engagement and thought leadership.

The appointment brings together three strands that financial businesses increasingly need to navigate as one: economics, policy and markets. Javadekar arrives with experience across all three. He holds a PhD in economics from Boston University and has worked as chief economist at Muthoot FinCorp, professor of finance at the Indian School of Business and research director at CAFRAL, an institution established by the Reserve Bank of India.

His policy credentials add another layer. Javadekar has served in advisory capacities, including as a member of the Securities and Exchange Board of India’s Research Advisory Committee. His research spans macroeconomics, banking, capital markets and asset management, and his work has been presented at international forums involving the International Monetary Fund, central banks and the American and European Economic Associations.

For Shriram, the timing is telling. Its businesses sit close to the pulse of household finance, small businesses, credit demand and capital markets. A stronger internal research engine can help turn shifts in interest rates, regulation, liquidity, consumption and financial behaviour into intelligence that business teams can actually use.

That is precisely the ambition outlined by Subhasri Sriram, managing director and chief executive officer, Shriram Capital. She said Javadekar’s combination of academic rigour, policy expertise and industry experience would strengthen the group’s research capabilities and help translate economic trends into actionable insights for its businesses, customers and stakeholders.

Javadekar, meanwhile, has framed the opportunity around building a world-class research platform combining rigorous analysis, market insights and policy engagement. He also pointed to India’s economic moment as one offering significant opportunities for innovation, growth and financial deepening.

The bigger play is therefore not simply to add an economist to the leadership bench. It is to institutionalise economic intelligence. Shriram Research is expected to support business strategy, contribute to public-policy discussions and deepen the group’s understanding of domestic and global economic trends.

That could prove increasingly valuable for a group operating at considerable scale. As of March 2026, Shriram Group served more than 2.98 crore customers, employed over 1.15 lakh people and operated through more than 4,700 branches. Its assets under management stood at Rs 3.69 lakh crore.

At that scale, research cannot afford to be an ivory-tower exercise. Its real test will be whether economic analysis can travel quickly from the research desk to the boardroom, from policy signals to business decisions, and ultimately from macroeconomic insight to better outcomes for customers.

Javadekar’s appointment suggests Shriram wants that bridge to become a permanent part of how it thinks and grows.
