The marketing leader moves to Yahoo after 16 years at Expedia Group, bringing extensive experience in digital and offline marketing, martech, analytics and business transformation.
SEATTLE: After 16 years at Expedia Group, Shariq Khalid Al Hasan has embarked on a new chapter in his career, joining Yahoo as vice-president, growth & media. The move marks a significant transition for the seasoned marketing leader, whose experience spans digital and offline marketing, business operations, marketing technology and data-driven growth.
In a LinkedIn post, Al Hasan shared that he joined Yahoo a few months ago, describing the move as the right opportunity to work with a stellar leadership team and help the company remain a trusted guide to the internet while delighting its millions of visitors.
His enthusiasm for the new role was evident in his playful reference to Yahoo’s iconic tagline, admitting that he has started saying “Yaaaaahhhooooo!” in meetings while embracing the company’s purple branding.
A 16-year journey at Expedia Group
Leaving Expedia Group was not an easy decision for Al Hasan, who described the company as a place that would always hold a special place in his heart.
Reflecting on his tenure, he highlighted achievements that included building the company’s marketing platform, innovating across channels, rewriting marketing playbooks, developing brands and exploring machine learning (ML) and agentic engines to drive business growth.
His reference to the company’s stock price chart underscored his confidence in the impact of these initiatives. His experience at Expedia Group reflects the increasingly important role of marketing leaders in combining technology, data and creative strategy to deliver measurable business outcomes.
Al Hasan’s professional expertise extends across search engine marketing (SEM), search engine optimisation (SEO), metasearch, email marketing, affiliate marketing and enterprise products. His areas of specialisation also include strategic planning, marketing expenditure management, business planning, analytics, product management and development, and data warehousing.
Beyond marketing execution, he brings experience in business process improvement, restructuring, reorganisation and financial management through mergers and acquisitions (M&A). His focus on building high-performing teams and leading organisational change further highlights the breadth of his leadership experience.
Relationships beyond job titles
Al Hasan also shared a personal observation from the transition. After leaving Expedia Group, he deliberately went silent on LinkedIn to see who would notice his absence.
The response from colleagues and industry partners was overwhelming, with people reaching out to check on him, ask about his next move or simply confirm that he had not abandoned the technology industry altogether.
The experience reinforced his belief that professional relationships extend beyond company affiliations and job titles. He expressed gratitude to the leaders and colleagues who had shaped his journey, acknowledging the memories, experiences and relationships built along the way.
As Al Hasan settles into his role at Yahoo, his next chapter brings together a broad marketing background and a focus on growth, innovation and organisational transformation. His move also reflects the continuing importance of leaders who can connect marketing strategy with technology, analytics and business performance in an increasingly data-driven digital ecosystem.
