Reliance Retail acquires AI fashion app Furrl

Mukesh Ambani’s retail arm buys an AI stylist, and the whole team that built it, betting algorithms will out sell influencers

MUMBAI: Reliance Retail has bought the intellectual property of Furrl, a four year old Indian fashion discovery app, in a deal that hands the conglomerate a working AI styling engine and the founder who dreamt it up. Esha Tiwary, who built Furrl to solve her own problem of hunting for decent Indian D2C fashion in an overcrowded market, now walks into Reliance Retail Ventures with her entire team in tow, tasked with scaling the very tech she built from scratch.

The pitch is simple and, on paper, rather clever. Furrl’s calling card was a piece of software that could take any catalogue image and turn it into a complete, shoppable look tailored to a shopper’s individual taste, essentially outsourcing the stylist’s eye to a machine. Jeyandran Venugopal, president and chief executive of Reliance Retail Ventures, called the app genuinely innovative in his welcome note, and it is not hard to see why the company wanted it. India’s fashion e-commerce market is a scrum of players fighting for the same distracted consumer, and whoever nails personalisation first stands to win a disproportionate share of wallets.

For Reliance, the logic fits a broader pattern. The retail giant has been stitching artificial intelligence into its consumer businesses at pace, and Furrl’s technology gives it a shortcut, buying proven code and a founder with battle scars rather than building from zero. Tiwary herself will now lead what she calls high ambition AI charters at Reliance, a role that sounds grand but signals real intent: this is not an acquihire buried in a back office, it is a bet on her judgement at frontier scale.

The bigger story is what this says about India’s D2C ecosystem. Furrl spent four years building a home for hundreds of indie fashion brands and courting millions of discerning shoppers, only to discover that its real value lay not in owning the customer relationship but in the algorithm underneath it. Expect more such deals. As India’s retail conglomerates race to bolt AI onto legacy scale, small teams with sharp, narrow technology will increasingly find themselves more valuable as acquisitions than as standalone apps chasing profitability alone. For founders watching from the sidelines, the message is unambiguous: build something a giant cannot easily replicate, and the giant will eventually come knocking.
