MUMBAI: A smoother take-off for digital travel bookings is on the cards as fintech platform PayU and Malaysia Airlines join hands to improve payment convenience and booking experiences for Indian customers, with tailored offers for everyone from students to premium and corporate travellers.

The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on 12 October to explore payment innovations, flexible payment options, exclusive offers and co-branded marketing initiatives aimed at boosting customer engagement, attracting new users and generating additional bookings in India.

The agreement brings together PayU’s digital payments network and Malaysia Airlines’ international connectivity, with both companies looking to make the booking journey more seamless and relevant to the needs of different traveller segments.

The proposed collaboration will explore customised propositions for leisure, premium, student and corporate travellers, reflecting the varied requirements of customers booking international journeys. The companies also plan to examine opportunities to improve customer acquisition and strengthen engagement through targeted offers and payment solutions.

The MoU was signed by Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) chief commercial officer of airline business Dersenish Aresandiran and PayU Payments Private Limited chief business officer Hemang Dattani.

“Travel is a high-intent category where seamless payments, flexibility, and relevant offers can meaningfully influence the customer experience,” said PayU Payments chief business officer Hemang Dattani. He said the partnership would explore ways to make digital bookings and payments more convenient while developing differentiated propositions for various traveller groups.

For Malaysia Airlines, the agreement reinforces its focus on India as a strategic market, where convenient booking options and relevant customer benefits could help strengthen its appeal.

“India remains an important and strategic market for Malaysia Airlines, and we are committed to making every journey more seamless, convenient and rewarding for our customers,” said Malaysia Aviation Group chief commercial officer of airline business Dersenish Aresandiran. He added that the collaboration would help the airline explore payment and engagement solutions aligned with the evolving needs of Indian travellers.

The partnership remains at an exploratory stage, with the MoU setting the framework for both companies to identify and develop potential initiatives rather than announcing a fully rolled-out offering.

PayU operates as a diversified fintech platform in India, with an investor base that includes Prosus. Its businesses provide digital payment and financial technology solutions, including payment gateway services for online businesses.

The company says it serves more than 450,000 businesses, ranging from large enterprises and e-commerce companies to small and medium-sized businesses. Its payment gateway supports more than 100 online payment methods, including credit and debit cards, net banking, UPI, wallets, equated monthly instalments and pay-later options.

For airlines competing for digitally savvy Indian customers, the checkout experience can be as important as the destination. If the proposed collaboration translates into convenient payments and meaningful offers, PayU and Malaysia Airlines could give travellers another reason to complete their bookings rather than abandon them midway.
