Passenger vehicle sales jump 28.63 per cent in June: FADA
Alternative fuel vehicles cross 40 per cent share as rural demand accelerates
NEW DELHI: India’s car market has shifted into a higher gear, and the countryside is helping lead the drive. Passenger vehicle retail sales in India rose 28.63 per cent year-on-year to 4,10,853 units in June, fuelled by strong rural demand and a growing appetite for alternative-fuel vehicles, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).
The broader automobile retail market also posted a robust performance, with total sales across all vehicle categories climbing 21.83 per cent to 25,57,234 units during the month. Growth was widespread, with tractors, two-wheelers, commercial vehicles and three-wheelers all registering double-digit gains.
Rural India emerged as the strongest engine of growth. Passenger vehicle sales in rural markets surged 35.09 per cent, comfortably outpacing the 24.67 per cent growth recorded in urban areas, signalling that demand from smaller towns and agricultural regions continues to strengthen despite broader economic uncertainties.
June also marked a significant milestone for cleaner mobility. Combined retail sales of CNG, hybrid and electric passenger vehicles accounted for more than 40 per cent of total passenger vehicle sales for the first time, rising 40.35 per cent compared with the same month last year.
Among alternative-fuel vehicles, CNG models held the largest share at 24.33 per cent, followed by hybrids at 8.27 per cent and electric vehicles (EVs) at 7.75 per cent. Dealers retailed 31,823 electric passenger vehicles during the month, underlining the steady expansion of India’s EV market.
FADA president C S Vigneshwar said tractor sales delivered their second-best June performance on record, highlighting the resilience of the rural economy even during what is typically a transition period before the agricultural season gathers pace.
Commercial vehicles also remained on the road to recovery. Retail sales in rural markets increased 21.63 per cent, while urban sales grew 12.75 per cent. Dealers attributed the improvement to stable freight movement, continued expansion in e-commerce logistics and easing supply chain constraints.
Electric commercial vehicles also continued to gain ground. Their share of total commercial vehicle retail sales reached a record 3.53 per cent in June, up sharply from 1.57 per cent a year earlier, reflecting the gradual electrification of commercial transport fleets.
Looking ahead, FADA urged passenger vehicle manufacturers to align wholesale dispatches more closely with retail demand during the monsoon months, cautioning that excessive stock allocation could leave dealerships carrying ageing inventory and higher holding costs.
The latest figures suggest India’s automobile market is being powered by more than just higher sales volumes. With rural demand strengthening and alternative-fuel vehicles entering the mainstream, the sector is increasingly finding growth in new markets, new technologies and changing consumer preferences.
