CALIFORNIA: Sometimes, even those driving the AI race want to ease off the accelerator. More than 1,100 employees from leading artificial intelligence companies have signed a petition urging the US government to support international safeguards that would deliberately slow the development of the world’s most advanced AI systems, according to a Bloomberg report.

The petition has been signed by employees from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Meta. It calls on policymakers to work with international partners to establish technical standards and governance frameworks for frontier AI, warning that advances in AI capabilities are outpacing the systems needed to keep the technology safe and accountable.

According to the petition, the US should support a coordinated global effort to develop governance tools and technical safeguards that intentionally moderate the pace of frontier AI development. The signatories argue that stronger oversight is needed before increasingly capable AI systems become too difficult to monitor or control.

The employees warned that future frontier AI models could surpass humanity’s ability to fully understand or effectively oversee them. Their concerns reflect a growing view within the industry that governance mechanisms are failing to keep pace with rapid advances in AI capabilities.

The appeal comes as technology companies and AI start-ups continue investing billions of dollars in increasingly powerful AI models, intensifying competition across the sector. According to Bloomberg, the rapid pace of innovation has made it harder for governments to introduce meaningful regulation, with policymaking often lagging behind technological progress.

Beyond the speed of AI development, the petition also highlights broader concerns surrounding AI safety, accountability, international governance, environmental impact, copyright disputes over training data and the technology’s potential impact on employment.

Calls for stronger AI regulation have gathered momentum in recent years as artificial intelligence has become central to business strategy and attracted significant investment worldwide. However, translating such proposals into policy will require sustained cooperation between governments, a challenge that remains complicated by geopolitical tensions and differing regulatory approaches.

While it remains unclear whether the petition will lead to concrete policy action, it underscores a notable shift within the AI industry itself. Rather than coming solely from external critics or regulators, calls for a more measured approach to frontier AI development are increasingly being voiced by employees helping to build the technology.
