SINGAPORE: OpenAI has just made its intentions unmistakable. The company best known for building the chatbot that ate the internet’s homework has now hired its first advertising person for Singapore and South-East Asia, and the appointment tells you more about where OpenAI is heading than any keynote could. Lynette Pereira-Teo joined the Global Ads Solutions team this month as a founding hire for the region, tasked with the rare job of building a commercial advertising business where, quite literally, none exists yet.

Pereira-Teo is not a rookie brought in to test the waters. Her CV is a decade-long tour of the exact skill set this mandate demands. Most recently she ran strategic accounts at Pinterest, owning regional commercial strategy and market incubation across APAC, and building go-to-market plans from zero for high-growth markets including South-East Asia, India, South Korea, Poland, Turkey and the Middle East and North Africa. Before that, seven years at Google saw her rise from programmatic account manager to principal account manager on large customer sales, working across retail, tech, telco and beauty, and helping homegrown Singapore brands scale into international export strategies. She cut her teeth as part of Google’s DIGITIZE graduate programme, a pioneering cohort run with Singapore’s Economic Development Board, where she was singled out as the top performer.

What makes this hire notable is the scale of ambition it implies. Building an advertising business inside a foundation model company is not the same as running sales for an established platform with a mature ad stack. There is no playbook, no legacy inventory, no decade of advertiser relationships to lean on. Pereira-Teo described the opportunity herself as a rare chance to define an advertising business from the ground up, shaping how brands connect with consumers through AI while simultaneously building the team and foundations needed to scale across the region. That is start-up energy wearing a very large company’s name tag.

The strategic read here is straightforward. OpenAI has spent the past few years proving it can build products people use obsessively. Monetising that attention at scale is the next, much harder problem, and advertising is the most obvious lever available. Hiring a founding ads person for South-East Asia specifically, rather than bolting the region onto a US-led structure, suggests OpenAI sees enough commercial weight in the region to warrant dedicated infrastructure from day one. Given the calibre of the hire, that is not a token gesture.

For brands and agencies across APAC, this is worth watching closely. An advertising business built by someone who has spent a decade opening new markets for Google and Pinterest, now working inside the company that owns ChatGPT, is not a small experiment. It is the early scaffolding of what could become one of the region’s most consequential new ad platforms, and the fact that OpenAI wanted someone with exactly this profile in the room from the start tells its own story.
