Musk says SpaceXAI will be renamed SpaceXSI after Trump backs ‘super intelligence’
The Tesla chief says SpaceX will adopt the new label, but offers no timeline
MUMBAI: Call it a super switch. Elon Musk says SpaceX is set to rename its artificial intelligence unit from SpaceXAI to SpaceXSI, following Donald Trump’s push to use the term “super intelligence” instead of “artificial intelligence”.
Musk confirmed the proposed name change in a reply to a user on X who asked whether SpaceXAI could be renamed SpaceXSI.
“Yes, we will make that change,” Musk replied.
The billionaire did not provide further details on the proposed rebranding, including when the change could take effect. As of the time of publication, the SpaceXAI account on X had also not been renamed.
SpaceX did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the proposed change.
The move follows Trump’s recent push to popularise the term “super intelligence” as an alternative to artificial intelligence. In a speech at the United Nations General Assembly last month, Trump said US government documents would henceforth use the term “super intelligence” instead of “artificial”.
“From this point forward, all of United States documents, and hopefully the world’s will be changed to use the much more accurate term ‘super’ as opposed to artificial. So it’s super intelligence,” Trump said.
Musk’s response suggests that the terminology is now finding its way into the branding of his AI operations. The proposed SpaceXSI name would replace the familiar “AI” suffix with “SI”, short for super intelligence.
However, for now, it remains a proposed change rather than a completed rebrand. The SpaceXAI name was still in use on its X account at the time of publication, and Musk has not indicated when the new identity will officially go live.
The name change also underlines how quickly terminology around advanced AI is evolving, with companies and policymakers increasingly experimenting with labels for increasingly capable AI systems. For SpaceX, at least, the next chapter could come with a new two-letter suffix.
