MUMBAI: Looks like smartphones are no longer just smart, they now fold, film in cinema-grade quality and moonlight as pocket-sized productivity machines. Motorola has unveiled the motorola razr fold in India, marking the company’s latest and most ambitious push into the premium foldable smartphone segment. With prices starting at Rs 1,49,999, the new device arrives carrying enough specs, AI tricks and cinematic buzzwords to make even laptops feel mildly threatened.

The foldable flagship, which Motorola describes as its first device designed to fully blend productivity and entertainment, will go on sale from 20 May across Flipkart, Motorola.in and major retail stores including Reliance Digital.

At the centre of the razr fold’s pitch is its camera setup and Motorola is clearly going all in on the flex. The device comes with what the company calls the world’s only Triple 50MP Pro-Grade Foldable Camera System, powered by Sony’s LYTIA 828 and LYTIA 600 sensors alongside moto ai enhancements.

The smartphone has also received the DXOMARK Gold Label for imaging performance, with support for 8K Dolby Vision recording, 4K Dolby Vision recording at up to 60fps across all lenses and AI-powered video enhancement features including what Motorola claims is the industry’s first dual tone mapping engine.

Photography enthusiasts also get a 50MP periscope lens with 3x optical zoom and up to 100x Super Zoom Pro, alongside a 50MP ultra-wide macro lens. For selfies, the phone packs both a 20MP external camera and a 32MP internal camera.

Motorola has also armed the device with a massive 6,000mAh silicon-carbon battery, promising over 43 hours of battery life on a single charge. The razr fold supports 80W TurboPower charging, 50W wireless charging and 5W reverse charging for accessories.

On the display front, the phone features an 8.1-inch 2K Extreme AMOLED main screen paired with a 6.6-inch external AMOLED display. Both displays support Pantone-validated colours and skin tones, while the external screen gets a 165Hz LTPO refresh rate for smoother scrolling and gaming. Peak brightness climbs to 6,200 nits on the main display.

Under the hood sits Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 processor paired with up to 16GB LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB UFS 4.1 storage. Motorola is also heavily leaning into AI with moto ai 2.0, offering tools such as AI Image Studio, Recall, Catch Me Up 2.0, Text-to-Image generation and Google Gemini integration.

The device runs Android 16-based Hello UI and comes with a notable promise of seven years of Android OS upgrades and seven years of security updates — increasingly becoming the new bragging right in flagship smartphones.

Design-wise, Motorola appears keen to position the razr fold as luxury tech rather than just another gadget. The device comes in Pantone-curated finishes including Blackened Blue and Lily White, featuring diamond piqué-inspired textures and satin-luxe styling. It weighs 240g and measures just 4.6mm when unfolded.

The foldable also arrives with IP48 and IP49 ratings for water and dust resistance, Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 protection and a titanium-reinforced hinge designed to minimise screen stress and reduce visible gaps.

Motorola is additionally leaning into football fandom with a FIFA World Cup 26 special edition, complete with themed wallpapers, ringtones, gaming access and exclusive FIFA branding.

The razr fold will be available in three variants:

  • 16GB + 512GB at Rs 1,59,999
  • FIFA Edition 16GB + 512GB at Rs 1,69,999

Motorola is also offering Rs 10,000 instant bank discounts or exchange bonuses, alongside no-cost EMI options for up to 18 months.

And in case all that folding drama goes sideways, buyers purchasing the device before 20 June will also get one free screen replacement valid for one year.
