Motorola begins Android 17 rollout with Signature smartphone portfolio

MUMBAI: Motorola is giving its smartphones a fresh software lift and Android 17 is bringing plenty of upgrades along for the ride. The company has begun rolling out Android 17 across its smartphone portfolio, starting with its Motorola Signature devices, before expanding the update to other eligible models in phases.

The latest Android version brings a mix of interface changes, personalisation tools, connectivity upgrades, security features and AI-powered additions aimed at making everyday smartphone use more intuitive.

One of the most visible changes comes to Quick Settings and Settings, which receive a redesigned interface, refreshed layouts, larger buttons and improved navigation. Motorola is also introducing an updated home-screen and personalisation experience, alongside a redesigned Display section and enhanced HDR brightness controls.

Accessibility gets an overhaul too, with changes to Vision Settings, Display Size and Magnification designed to make controls clearer and navigation easier.

On the connectivity front, Instant Hotspot is designed to simplify internet sharing, while Nearby Audio Streams adds new functionality for connected devices. Android 17 also introduces device diagnostics, allowing users to check component health and access information about their devices.

Security is another major part of the update. Features include Failed Authentication Lock, along with changes to PIN protection and other privacy and security controls.

Then there is the AI angle. Circle to Search gets real-time translation, allowing users to translate content directly through the feature rather than switching between applications.

Motorola is also expanding Quick Share, with users now able to share content with iOS users, who can scan Quick Share QR codes and download the shared material through the web. Widgets are getting more interactive too, including features such as snap scrolling.

Android 17 also brings more practical notification tools. Notification summaries and improved organisation are designed to make alerts easier to manage, while sensitive notifications receive additional protection on the lock screen.

For messaging, Scam Detection will flag potentially suspicious SMS, MMS and RCS messages, giving users an additional layer of protection against possible scams. Sharing Nudges, meanwhile, encourage users to share photos they have just captured with friends and family.

The rollout begins with the Signature portfolio and will be progressively extended to other eligible Motorola smartphones as part of a phased deployment.
