MUMBAI: Motorola has started rolling out Android 17 in India, beginning with its Signature portfolio as the smartphone maker looks to deliver a more personalised, secure and intuitive software experience to consumers.

The rollout brings a series of changes aimed at making everyday smartphone use smoother, while adding new privacy, security, accessibility, connectivity and AI-powered features. The update will be extended progressively to other eligible Motorola smartphones as part of a phased deployment.

One of the most visible changes is a redesigned interface. Android 17 introduces an updated Quick Settings layout, refreshed Settings menus, larger buttons and simpler navigation. Motorola users will also get a refreshed home screen and personalisation experience, along with an updated Display layout and improved HDR brightness controls.

The update also expands accessibility features across Vision Settings, Display Size and Magnification, with clearer controls and easier navigation.

Android 17 adds several practical tools aimed at giving users greater control over their devices. Instant Hotspot is designed to make connectivity sharing easier, while Nearby Audio Streams improves experiences with connected devices.

Motorola is also introducing device diagnostics, allowing users to check component health and access device-related diagnostic information.

On the security front, the update adds Failed Authentication Lock, along with improvements to PIN protection and other security and privacy controls.

There are changes to notifications as well. New notification summaries and organisation features are intended to make alerts easier to manage, while sensitive notifications receive additional protection on the lock screen.

Android 17 also introduces Messages Scam Detection for SMS, MMS and RCS messages. The feature is designed to proactively flag potentially suspicious messages and help users identify possible scams.

The update brings AI-powered improvements to Circle to Search, including real-time translation that allows users to translate content directly through the feature.

Quick Share is also becoming more flexible. Motorola users can share content with people using iOS, who can scan Quick Share QR codes and download the shared content through the web.

Widgets receive additional functionality too, including interactions such as snap scrolling. Sharing Nudges will encourage users to share photos they have just captured with friends and family.

Motorola said the Android 17 rollout forms part of its broader software strategy, with the company focusing on timely operating system upgrades and access to newer Android features.

Motorola India, managing director, T.M. Narasimhan, said, “At Motorola, we are committed to delivering fast, stable, and high-quality software experiences that enhance the way consumers interact with their smartphones. With the rollout of Android 17, beginning with our Signature portfolio, we are bringing the latest Android innovations to our users through meaningful enhancements across personalisation, security, AI-powered experiences, and everyday usability.”

The Signature portfolio is the first to receive Android 17 in India, with the rollout set to expand to other eligible Motorola smartphones in phases. For consumers, the upgrade promises a little more control, a little more protection and plenty of new ways to make their phones work smarter.
